But was watchying the telly the other day/ night & some shite came up regarding some appalling malcom MCLaren film - Ghost of Christmas ? - apparently much of it was filmed in a secret underground Victorian street hidden away beneath Selfridges on Oxford St - still has cobbles/ shop fronts etc preserved, but is underground.

THis, is true, I think is fascinating.

But I cant find any info on it anywhere

Can anyone help withj info on this ?

I may indeed be some kond of mug here & have been taken in buy a pack of lies, but hope not

I Am fascinated by this kinda stuff I must admit - I currently work on King William st & recently found out that we are directly above a disused Tube station - basically left at the end of the war - it still has original propaganda posters etc up on the walls - "Keep Mum" & the like...It still has its own tunnels connecting it with the south side of the thames, but unused for a long time.......I am trying to find a way to get into the old station, but its a bit tricky!

Unlike the Aldwych station, which is now used for filming most weeks etc, this one is a time capsual by all accounts.......

I will find way in if it kills me.

Sounds very unlikely. The Central Line runs directly underneath Oxford Street.

Also, I am really into disused stations and whatnot and I am sure I would have come across this in my reading.

It hasn't been a tube station since long before WWII - it closed to trains in 1900!

King William Street station on Subterranea Britannica

The only places I can think of that had something of this sort are Mary Kings Close in Edinburgh, roofed over when the Royal Exchange (now City Chambers) was extended,

There's also something similar in Southport, Lancs, where the lower level of shops was blocked off and roofed over as part of a flood prevention scheme.

Don't know whether either might have been available as a film location back in 1991.

Further along the street, I seem to recall there being a roadway beneath bits of Holborn / Holborn Viaduct.

Never heard anything about Oxford Street, though, and neither has www.subbrit.org.uk

The disused Post Office Railway runs nearby, though:

...this also mentions
an older and long-disused line from Euston to Holborn that I'd not heard of before.
