I am in a literary rut, please help.

I found myself intrigued by the beginning of 'If on a Winter's Night a Traveller' so bought it.

OMG.

I found an ubersynopsis of it once. It just said:

You think you are reading this book. You're not.

Just read a synopsis on Amazon.

Not one to read after a couple of spliffs, I'd imagine.

What, pray tell, is a ''scream pub''?

i know where that pub is now from that description :)

I'm going to go and find out how much library membership is.

Library membership is free isn't it?? Do you have to pay in some places?

Iirc you need to take prove of address(utility bill, bank statement or whatever), and one or two other forms of id.

Our charity shops have a good range usually which is why I suggested them, bit crap the ones near you are rubbish.

Not here, you pay to borrow cds/dvds, or if they need to get a book from another library or if you want them to order a new one. 25p or thereabouts last time iirc, that was last summer though.

The whole point of the british library system is that it is supposed to be free for all, some historical thing afaik.

just read

homicide: a year on the killing streets - david simon

me too, i think after seeing you mention it on here as it goes (and being a Wire obsessive)

i've just bought the first series of Homicide on DVD :D

good book, want to get hold of The Corner now.

to the OP - amazon do loads of second hand books as well. not as cheap as charity shops (or librarys) but can often get a book of your choice through the door for under £3

I like reading, and will read all sorts, but nothing is grabbing my attention and exciting me right now. I recently read Brave New World for the first time, and would quite like to read more Huxley (The Island?), but am not really feeling Sci-Fi lit right now. I've also read Patrick Mcabe's The Dead School, which was brilliant, and James Frey's A million Little Pieces, which was entertaining, even though I don't normally do biographies/memoirs. I need some inspiration and recommendations please!

I think part of the problem is that I resent spending £8+ on a book which I will probably only read once, then will collect dust for the rest of eternity. Perhaps if someone can recommend a site where you can trade second hand books then it'd help? I assume such a thing exists.

I use http://www.readitswapit.co.uk which is dead easy to use, the only cost is post and packaging, which is usually 1.50 or so for a standard paperback. Can highly recommend it.

it's excellent - it read like a novel, even though they were talking about real murders, real cops, real people...

gonna buy the corner, season 5 should have been delivered today, got season 1 of homicide - lot more to buy:D

Update: I've now finished If On A Winter's Night A Traveller, which was very rewarding. At first I thought it was heading towards post modernist bollocks, but I'm glad I persevered as it was in a class of it's own. It's taken me a while to read it as requires a little bit more thought than I'm used to. Thanks to quimcunx for the recommendation.
I've read the first few chapters of Vernon God Little, and it's already grabbed my attention. Thanks to you guys I've got enough reading to last me to spring now :)

Whenever I find myself in a literary rut I turn to persephone books. I always find some gem of a book. I like the ethos of the company and they are a treat to read and to hold and to look at, especially the classic ones, they are a joy.
Thankfully or not I often just happen to be passing by their shop which gives me ample opportunity to indulge. :)

The Ritzy has a book exchange corner by the way, I keep picking books up but haven't left any yet:o
