I am considerably more left wing than you.

Well of course I'm not, but it strikes me that there's a competition on here to appear to be as "left wing" as possible, and there is perceived virtue in being really really REALLY left wing and anyone less left wing is horrible.

Some of the recent comments in the Mark Steel thread are typical, but it's all over this forum.

So, what is the leftiest left wing position you could have?

Are there less left wing positions than the leftiest left wing position you could have that could stil be acceptable to really left wing people?

And what is the point in being dead left wing? Other than male competitiveness?

Funnily enough in the 80's i used to know people who went out of their way to be right on yet behind the scenes treated their lasses like shite etc. I found the most genuine people were normal working class geezers that were a bit naughty and violent at times but they are still the same now whilst the right oners are starting to sound like New Labour!

The thing is that I AM MORE LEFT WING than most of the lily livered liberals on here....
Most of them are reactionaries pretending to be left wing. Most of them are as opposed to majority control as any Tory....Of course ideally you know some time in the future after a lengthy period of re-education they may trust the majority with power just not yet boys eh just not yet.......
Stone the non believers.....

OK then tell me how you can trust a government that outlaws protest, wants us all to be fingerprinted and be forced to pay for our own ID cards, and constantly attacks the very poorest in society....if you are that trusting woe betide you if Canadian lottery scamsters get your address!

Who said i trusted the govt....Mind you i would trust them a lot more than i would most of their pretend to be left crtitics.........

"All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?"

That might have been humourous if it approached being a reasonable analogy, but it doesn't.
One can't candidly state that "new" Labour have done much to add to the common weal. Yes, we've had extra education and health spending, but where did the money go, on publicly-owned infrastructure or into the pockets of the private sector? Have the public been given anything approaching a good deal for their money? I'd argue that they haven't.
The Romans at least left behind lasting contributions to society and culture, "new" Labour are set to leave many more time-delayed financial bombs than they are to leave lasting social contributions, thus doing much the same as those they took over from.

yes spot on uberd and brass .. but 'you also forgot' .. the creation of a society where the gaining of money has become the only thing of importance .. new labour as much as tory .. this has had a deeply destructive affect on society particulalry younger people who do not understand any other way of living but spiving ( trading ) and (drug ) dealing ..

That such an attitude continued past the Conservatives is indicative of just how intellectually-bankrupt the whole "Third Way" rationale was, as if you could ever reconcile free market capitalism with any form of realistic social democracy, except by eliding principles (obviously not the free market principles, but rather the social democratic ones) that render the entire project invalid.

I never like to agree with you VP. But this time i find it difficult to argue.
Except to say that i think given the high level of corruption in the public and voluntary sector in the UK New Labour were always going to have their work cut out to ensure the extra money made as much of a difference as it could.

So now it's New Labour "suffering" under the dodgy fucking deal that typify public contracts rather than being part of the problem.
Change the fucking record. A brief perusal of Private Eye for example will put you right.

I think at the end of the day what people post will show their leanings .i consider myself on the left but do not try to pigeon hole myself or anyone else.mind you when i was a member of the labour party i thought i was a bit right of centre but this mob persuaded me that i am on the left:D

It's the same on sites where there are many right-wing people. Anyone there who tries to say something socialist/left-wing there will result in everyone else ganging on them and shouting them down. It does happen here too, but the truth is neither are right, there are no right or wrongs in politics and you're a fool if you think there are. I think having a site solely of lefties/righties is boring, they'll agree on most things and only argue minor details so lets be having you...

I.e. if you have views that are more left wing than that then hooray, your views are simply unelectable!

Obviously the only point in having an opinion on anything is to get elected.

Are you the kind of person who votes for whichever party you think is more likely to win?

(Points for dumbest post on thread so far to welweit)

There are rights and wrongs that transcend political ideology. To believe otherwise is daft.

The point is that if your super left wing views are unelectable you find yourself in a small minority. You may be in a majority on this board which may give you some succour but in terms of what the mass of the people of Britain believe in your views are not popular.

As to how and why, and if at all, I vote, there are a great many possible reasons to vote.

erm Private eye......You are considerably more right wing than me isamabard....

"Private Eye" is right-wing?
That'll be news to it's founding fathers and staff, who've always held it aloof from party politics, criticising left and right equally when they do wrong.

I don't believe there is a such thing as a right or wrong thing. It's not a wanky 6th form philosophical thing I just don't believe there is a such thing as either. :)

Now believing in something is wrong or right is a different matter altogether of course.

I am not going to engage in a a dick waving contest with you tbaldwin.

Private Eye may have it's upper middle class luvvie side to it but has a proven track ecord in exposing the dodgy privatisation and cash bung scams run by Labour over the past 12 years.

Didnt say Private eye was right wing did i....But its hardly left wing either is it? Much prefered scallywag, which wasnt so timid in exposing things....

Thank god for that cos my cheesy shrivel piece has not seen the light of day since....god knows....

Private Eye is leftwing in any political description of leftwing I would choose to ascribe to. It has some dodgy features on Muslims, and can be very sectarian with broader movements, but criticising all aspects of of the body politick should surely be something which lefties would associate with themselves?

I think you missed the point... what is the point of having electable views or of being in a majority? Even politicians don't have electable views, they just say things that will get them elected.

I don't choose my opinions in order to be popular or "electable" but it sounds from this post that you do, which is rather bizzare and incredibly shallow.

So, are you to the left or the right of Frank Field?
