Husker Du

And this

Is fucking hilarious. I'm not sure that Bob Mould ever did angry properly. Miserable yes, but angry, naaah. He's giving it a good old try though.

I've always found Husker Du pretty underwhelming, for the reasons RenegadeDog and El Jefe describe above. I do like Pretty Green Eyes though.

For me it's the sound itself. The albums sound like they were recorded inside a tin can. That might make sense with a steve albini type band but I think Husker Du would have sounded much better with more expansive production.

? What reasons? I'm a massive Husker Du fan :D

From you, this reason:

I think with a lot of this stuff, it depends what you heard first, stuff like that

I never said it was one you subscribed to! Just couldn't be arsed to explain my own personal timeline and its influence on my feelings all over again :D

The problem with Warehouse Stories for me, is that on several occasions the lyrics and the musicbecome a little bit too cliched at times, plus there are some very weak songs on there. Still "Could You be the One" and Tell you Tomorrow" are among my favourite songs.

Just reading 'Could You Be The One' sent shivers up my spine and through my brain :)

Grant Hart sort of agreed with that, he complained about the lack of variation in the sound and about how every song had a guitar solo whether it was required or not. He wasn't happy about only being allowed to have 9 songs on the album either. I don't mind the odd dud tune here and there, they wrote and recorded so quickly, a few were bound to get by.

A fantastic band and brilliant live. I personally really like 'Warehouse'. I'd start a novice at Candy Apple.. rather than 'Land Speed Record' myself. Am going to dig out my old vinyl out now and annoy neighbours :)

ah husker du - what a fucking band!!

My fave album has to be New Day Rising - it's just a fucking peach. To this day Celebrated Summer gives me goosebumps up my spine.

Zen arcade comes a close second I think.

And I totally disagree that they don't sound as good these days. Just the other day Books About UFO's came plinkety-plonking onto the old Itunes, and even my fella (who is too much of an old git to 'get' husker du) commented on what a great tune it was.

Now I'm just praying Greg will quit selling donuts so they can do a come-back gig in my back garden.

Zen Arcade is good. But if you want a really convincing attempt to step outside of the US hardcore norms it's got to be the Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime released in the same year (1984).
Well, Husker Du introduced me to The Minutmen and all the other SST stuff. Given the utterly shitty state of Irish radio in the 80's, hearing Makes No Sense At All thundering from the speakers one evening was a revelation really.
