See the Spitfire is a sexy, gorgeous plane with beutiful lines and beutiful specs and with an engine to die for but for some reaosn I have always prefered the Hurricane.

Don't ask me why I can't qute put my finger on it. I think it is those solid, understated lines that does it for me.

Oh and I will second the love for the Mosquito. Fucking wicked plane.

that's because, despite everything, you're a sensible lad ;)

:p

I think it is the shape the cockpit cover. It looks really good.

So, when you going to start another thread on your favourite bomber :p Will it be a Halifax or a Lancaster?

(Man this thread is making me realise it has been far far too long since I was at an air museum!!!)

Spitfire - the most beautiful thing that man has ever created. Faster, more manoeuverable, easier to fly, easier to modify and better looking than the Hurri

There were more Hurricanes and they did more damage, but the Spitfire...its just the most beautiful thing ever to fly.

There were only more Hurricanes until 1941, when they were withdrawn from use as front line fighters in Europe (although they did continue in North Africa and the Far East)

Someone around here seems to have a collection of old aircraft, we regularly (once every two weeks or so) get a Hurricane flying over, also some kind of biplane.

Voted Spitfire, but this baby does it every time:

De Havilland Mosquito. Wood and fabric poetry in motion.

Exactly my thoughts.

You could claim that about the SA80 over the L1A1, but it still doesn't make it intrinsically better, just more appealing to showoffs and brylcreme users! :p

Hurricanes all the way! Spitfires didn't have a comic character named after them did they?

(slopes off to read "Captain Hurricane Annual 1971")

The SA80 has one thing over the SLR - full rock and roll. Fuck all else going for it.

The Spit was still miles better than the Hurricane though, that's why they were in use until 1954, and the Hurricane wasn't :p

Just finished (today) "Fighter Boys" by Patrick Bishop, about the Battle of Britain. The Hurricane was more effective against the German bombers during the Battle of Britain, but was inferior to the German's main fighter, the ME109, as it was slower. So often the Hurricanes would go after the (easier) bombers whilst the faster Spitfires took on the German fighter escort - meaning lower "kill" numbers for the Spitfire.

So I'm voting Spitfire, it was a superior `plane, and I love its jaunty wing angle.

PS Science Museum has a deconstructed Spitfire on display at the moment. Not worth a special trip, but if you are in the area...
