WATCH OUT, GEORGE, HE'S GOT A SCREWDRIVER!
hawker hurricane

designed by sidney camm, the first fighter monoplane taken into raf service, the hurricane was later developed into a fighter-bomber and for use with rockets. it was made mainly of wood and fabric, and had a top speed of 340 mph; 1,850 horsepower; range 460 miles (or 920 with auxiliary tanks)...

supermarine spitfire

designed by rj mitchell, the first truly modern fighter plane, light and robust. versions went from spitfire i to seafire 47 (a series of variants designed for carrier use) reached from 350-450mph; 1,050-2,350 horsepower; maximum range 395-1,475 miles; rate of climb 2,500-4,800 feet per minute; time to 20,000 feet 9.4-4.8 minutes...

The Hurricane was, I believe, responsible for far more damage to the enemy than the Spitfire (at least in the Battle of Britain), but it's not the best looking machine out there. I'll have a Spitfire please.

I'd have the Hurricane - better 'gun platform' according to th accounts I have read.

Unless it was one of the PRU Spitfires - [Photo Reconnaisance{sp?} Unit ].
They stripped out as much weight and tweaked the areodynamics to make it as fast as possible.....

We have a number of former airfields near where I live and we always get a fly-by on the anniversary of the "Battle of London" . Last year we had a both of the Hurri and the Spit zooming overhead for about half an hour [ probably for the big-wigs visiting Bentley Prioty ] and even though the Spit appeared more graceful , the Hurri looked far more menacing....

I'm going to miss the fly-bys when I move... :(

Neither if one is being hypercritical . It would have to be the P51 Mustang which used the Merlin engine and could escort bombers all the way to and all the way back from Germany.
That having been said, as an ex Spitfire pilot (one of the few) stated to a German fighter Ace of the second world war at a dinner party a few years ago:- "Any idiot could fly a Spitfire".
German fighter planes took a hell of a lot of skill to fly and more were lost in take off and landing accidents than were lost to enemy action.

The intro to my funeral music CD is 15 seconds of a Spitfire flying overhead whilst performing a roll.

Can't say any more than that. :)

I get a few Spitfires go low over my house on commemorative days and they are just the most amazing sight/sound. Something about them brings a tear to my eye. :o

The spitfire is the not the first modern fighter plane anyway :p

Modern ones are defined by being jet powered and with swept back wings... in my opinion anyway...

there is another ww2 aircraft thread - this one's a straight hurricane/spitfire dogfight.

If you want to be an arsehole take it elsewhere...

Pah! Many of the piloits preferred their hurricanes.. and the wider wheel base made them easier to land.. the fabric construction harder to destroy..

and the hurricane squadrons were the major contributors to the Battle of Britain.

:p
