Hurrican Katrina: US death toll announced yet?

pbman said:
Have you seen what they have to go through to search these houses?
Its not easy or quick...............

Poor dead souls. One or a million, it's a tragic waste of lives, lives the Christians say are cast in God's image. God or not, it's a sad, sad, sad event.

I suppose.

I've read that the gases escaping from the dead bodies enclosed in small spaces, can overcome the rescuers. Some have had to be treated in hyperbaric chambers.

Its dangerouse, they have to have full suits and other protective gear.

You ever try walking around in that shit, at 100 degree temp?

Well It has not been as bad as reported, Go figure?

Don't be ignorant, for once. It wasn't the media who were plucking numbers out of the air. They were merely quoting what they were being told and going by the fact 10,000 body bags had been ordered.

You're only upset because Katrina didn't completely obliterate all those "homies" you hate so much.

Absolutely.

Is it me or has anyone else noticed how the USG always seem to either massively over-estimate death/casualty counts or simply not have figures for them at all? Whereas the rest of the world seems to start off with lower numbers and then get higher?

I'm thinking of-
Katrina, original guestimate 10000+. final(ish) 1000
9/11, original 20000+, final 2752
Iraq Occupation, original, er no idea, final, still no idea!

As opposed to-
Tsunami - originally 5000-10000, final 250000+
London Bombings -originally 10-20, final 52.

It's GW laying the groundwork for the concern that he shows afterwards to make up for the complete lack of leadership he showed during.

iirc, the USG underestimated the death count in Iraq :D

As PM just commented, mis-underestimated, and anyway I was just including that to make the point they have absolutely no idea what the count is.

I can see why though, as I would imagine they use a different scale for Iraqi lives, what with them being worth less than US ones. In fact that applies to Western lives in general of course.

I don't think one thousand dead qualifies as minor in anyone's book.

So the gov't is responssible for media speculation due to the fact that they wanted to make sure they were prepaired?

What a strange world you live in.

"Another episode in the rapidly evolving Abramoff scandal involves David Safavian, one of the Bush administration's top federal procurement officials. He resigned shortly before being arrested last week for allegedly lying to officials and obstructing a Justice Department investigation in connection with his relationship with Abramoff. ..

Before Safavian resigned, he reportedly was working on contracting policies for Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. Don't expect the GOP Congress to look askance at this. Safavian's wife is chief counsel for oversight and investigations on the House Government Reform Committee, which oversees procurement matters, although she's said she'll recuse herself. "

Just a bit of the corruption charges welling up against this administration.

What a good man he is...

He also contended it's "unreasonable" to expect the U.S. government to provide food, water, gasoline and transportation for everyone.

"When Michael Brown admitted to reporters that he didn't know thousands of survivors were stranded at the New Orleans convention center without food or water, even though TV journalists had been reporting that fact for hours, his appearance before us today became inevitable." _ Committee chairman Tom Davis, R-Va

"Maybe the president made a very good move when he asked you to leave your job." _ Taylor.

It's far too easy to blame the disaster that followed Katrina on the Louisiana state government. The fact is, FEMA was led by a man who ought not to have been in the job. Furthermore it highlights the arcane nature of the relationship between state and Federal government. There has to be a Federal response to natural disasters.

Brown didn't "kick" anyone's "ass", he merely shifted the blame to others.

Yes, it's the commies' fault that well over a thousand died. Nothing to do with federal and state government.

How old did you say you were? This post looks as though it was written by an 8 year old.

No remarks about "homey culture" and those nasty black folk then?

Well it is at least partially Bush's fault:

He didn't act fast enough
He cut the budget for the leves
He put an incompetent horse fan in charge of FEMA

But you won't address those points, you'll just ignore them as per usual.

Yesterday, Quebec and Newfoundland were flooded - roads and bridges washed out, homes under water.

State of emergency was declared, homes evacuated, red cross set up shelters,
Municipal Affairs and other provincial officials arrived to assess the damage, Prime Minister is sending money into the area.

The rains started in the early morning and the wheels were in motion by 7:30. There was no advanced warning.

Canada is used to handling natural disasters. We have plans to help our people.

Maybe Mr. Brown should come see how we are set up to handle disasters. Never mind, we are a backward, commie loving, gay supporting country - what could the mighty Americans learn from us?
