humous

Seeing as everyone in that area of the Med has jumped in and out of each other's cultures for centuries - Greek, Lebanese, Turkish, Arabic, Persian et al - it's not surprising they all claim ownership.
It's the same with pretty much every arabic dish :D

Middle eastern food is generally very nice.

Tonight I will be making falafel pittas with lots of salad, avocado, my own balsamic dressing and chilli oil.

Unless I'm very careful I will eat four of them, and become fatter.

I've never managed to make falafel (taamia ;)) successfully... might give it a go next week - and have them with a tahina sauce... mmmmmmmm

*dribble*

I made a big bowl of humous last night. Put a tad too much garlic in it but then we like garlic in my house.

I use:

1 and 1/2 can of chickpeas, drained.
3 tsp olive oil
2-3 tsp tahini
juice of 1 lemon
1-2 cloves of garlic (depends on size)
salt n pepper
bit of water (as much as is needed)

Blend. Eat.

Oil, oil and oil. It's not bad for you but it is calorie central.

Yeah but you don't eat whole bowls of it every day! :D In moderation it's good for you - chickpeas (low fat protein), garlic, lemon juice, tahini. There's not that much oil in it...

I'm not lardy but I love my food and take pride in my cooking :) I hate it when people look at me and say "You don't eat much do you?"

Yes I do! I cook well an' all! :( :D

Tesco (I think) do a lovely black & green olive one. It's soooo nice.

I made some foul (as in the bean, not foul as in urgh )dip last night (started a thead on it ages ago and finally got my mates recepe yesterday :D ). Its kind of like homous, but...er... not. It is lebanise though and very nice.

*ahem*

Tahini is sesame oil and sesame paste. 50% of it is fats, albeit mostly unsaturated (about 90%). My hummus recipe is about 3:1 chick peas to tahini, which gives us a fat content overall of about 17%. Or, to put it in supermarket language, a mere 83% "fat free".

Yeah but it's sesame and olive oil - both very good for you (uncooked)! And I dunno about you but I don't it eat by the bowl full + I use less oils than you. A dollop here, a dollop there etc....IMO, it's not bad for you + there's so many good things in it.

You're not one of them fat obsessives are you? :p

I am sure all those flavoured supermarket humous's are aimed at dope smoking munchies monster with a pachant for tasty savoury food

Possibly, but I don't smoke dope! :)

Oh, and I think you probably mean penchant. [/pedantmode]

If you saw the size of me (overweight, though not obese - quite), you'd know the answer to that question without asking :)

I take your point - one's far better eating a load of hummus than something full of processed and/or saturated fats - but anyone who's controlling their calorie intake would want to be aware that, just because hummus is dead healthy, it's still pretty full of calories!

sorry was going to say yesterday but had to go out:

-drain can of foul medammas beans and wash off stuff around them (I got some from an arabic shop near me, not sure if supermarkets sell them, they may well do)
-put in bowl and microwave for 1 min
-crush up beans a bit with spoon, but not too much
-add chopped tomatoes
-put in microwave for 1 min
- add a bit of parsley, salt, pepper, chilli flakes, 3 large cloves of galic, crushed and a bit of lemon juice and mix it all up a bit.
-microwave for another minute
-add a bit of olive oil
-eat with some chopped toms, red onion and pitta.

Yum.

I get what you're saying :) . I don't and never have watched my weight so I don't think much in terms of fat/salt/sugar etc (unless I'm eating junk food!) I guess it depends on your perception.
