Hummer oversized SUVs

Was it this: a buddy of mine has one:

Now that looks like something that could make a meal out of speed humps. Long travel suspension to patter over 'em at 30 and sufficient weight to flatten the buggers for the benefit of those following along .

Something like that is worse on speed bumps than a Prius or something small.

An F350 is a truck, not a true SUV, even though it does have 4 wheel drive.

It's confusing, I know...

The people who buy SUVs usually wouldn't go in for an F350.

Nah, a Land Rover Defender is about the only off-roader (I won't call it an SUV, 'cos it's hardly a 'sports' vehicle) that a) will actually do much when further off road than the supermarket car park, which is why people who really do need to go off-road have them rather than trendy SUVs, and b) doesn't make its driver look a complete twat.

Of course: the british SUV.....

If you mean that there's a certain patriotic pride in the Land Rover this side of the pond, then yes, there is. But why not? It's been in production since 1948 and it's still going strong, simply because it does precisely what it says on the tin. And the lifestyle SUV brigade avoid it because it's noisy, uncomfortable and most of them you see are covered in straw and cow shit.

<e2a> Firk's right. The Landie itself isn't an SUV, although some other vehicles made under the 'Land Rover' brand certainly are...

The British SUB is probably the Freelander. They're shite.

I also quite like the old Toyota Hilux, the new ones are shit but the old ones had about 2.5 foot ground clearance. They were probably the best built 4x4 ever. They use them in salt mines because they just keep going and going no matter how aggressive the environment is.

Even when Top Gear are trying to wreck one....

(Health warning: contains Jeremy Clarkson)

In fact they dumped a hilux in the sea for a day or two on top gear and it still went.

Edit to add: cheers, RK, I haven't seen that before - watching it now :D

I like Firky's use of fonts to show tabloid and broadsheet headlines. Very nice :)

Firky: That's the same hilux. They just kept on abusing it and it never died. Awesome car.

My uncle has a hill farm and he has one of the old ones. No MOT or anything as it just runs about his fields. He's never had it serviced in over ten years and it keeps going and it goes through anything. IMO it is probaby the best built vehicle in the world. Shame the new ones are shite. Like the defender it is just an engine on a ladder chassis with seats bolted on. Raw and simple. Then when they started adding computerised traction control and anti-roll devices, green engines etc. it all went to pot.

That youtube link was class, cheers RK :)

Stupid thread title changed.

Suggest it might be changed wrongly? That is an ickle baby Hummer. :p

This abomination is a frequent sight on the streets of Aberdeen:

One of its occupants once tried to take a swipe at me with a blow-up doll when I passed by on the bike.

Along with this one:

And several others of various formsin private hands that are all larger than Firky's.

I don't actually mind the Defender, but I don't think it stands head and shoulders over the Jeep.

So's the Jeep.:)

Loads of wranglers (and Cherokees, grand Cherokees etc) out here.

They are a blast off-road, but pretty shitty on it - especially on long motorway journeys.

I nearly bought a Grand Cherokee, but the interior was horrific and the rear leg-room tiny when considering the size of the thing! Massive boot (sorry "trunk" though)

I bought a Nissan Murano in the end - no-were near as good off-road, but still has AWD for the rough stuff and the wet and is far nicer inside. 5 adults can sit in considerable space and comfort too.

Petrol prices really aren't a concern in the Middle East, as borne out by the number of Hummers, Range Rovers, Suburbans, Escalades and Landcruisers etc on the roads.
