How's everyone's chillis doing?

I,m growing rainbow chilli's again this year cos the seeds have a great rate of germination, however due to the shitey rainy piss down weather the plants are only about 7 inches high, thank fuck for plastic greenhouses.

Stig the one i got from you is going crazy, i think it might take over our kitchen and i might not be able to get it out the door to take it when i move house.

:D ours are the same, we can't see out of the windows any more.

I've had the first few chillis off the biggest ones, but the rest are just starting to flower now.

When you move you can always cut them down a bit, it won't kill them.

link about pruning here

and here is a whole forum about growing chillis :D

Mine is about 60 cm tall with many branches and leaves, it's just started flowering.

All I've done is water it. Can anyone tell me, is there anything else I need to do?

Yep, you need to help pollinate the flowers, although they may be ok on their own, most of ours seem to be ok when we forget about them.

you have to poke the flowers with something, like a paintbrush, or just your finger, and poke some other flowers, to spread the pollen about.

Couple of possibly helpful threads on the amazing chilli forum I just found, below. (I'm going to be bookmarking this site, oh yes. :D )

Hope you lot are re-potting your chillis by the way. I've done ours two or three times now. Some of them are in pots bigger than buckets.

you can get little bags of compost form pound shops and similar, or just nick some from your local verge at midnight (make sure you are wearing a balaclava and black&white stripey top)

No I haven't repotted mine :o

It's not that big...but there's a garden centre-y thing in Herne Hill I can go to to get a bigger pot and some compost so I'll do that this weekend.

One of the leaves has been partly eaten by summat - should I just snip it off?

mine had some wierd eggs and bugs on the buds, so i pruned them all off about a shoot. hope they grow back.

They will, they might take longer to flower though.

Try squirting them with diluted ecover if it happens again. (or any washing up liquid I suppose, it's just ecover is biodegradeable)

Yeah, can do, i probably would. It won't do it any harm.

Naah, just never mention it again and hope they forget all about it. :p

Did OK with the chillis in the end. In fact, they're still growing and it's not dropping below 15/16 degrees where they are.

Should get a good crop of joes long, cayenne, apache, a big Peruvian type I got from my allotments' community scheme. The only slight disapppointment is the habaneros, as some aren't seemingly getting to full size

Looking good spion

Mine took a stupid amount of time to germinate this year, and I only have 3 plants on the go, none of which are likely to fruit this year. One is inside and doing really well though, and the other two are outside as an experiment

Just for the sake of completeness, here's the harvest for this year. This lot will be a jar or two of sauce before too long :D

Still got 6 plants alive indoors and 6 outdoors, still growing chillis!

There are a lot now that might not ever go red though, and there are no more flowers.

The cats killed one in the middle of the night, well, pruned it very heavily, at least. It'll survive, but it's a third of it's original size. *shakes fist*

Well, against the odds, I have chillis growing on my indoor plant!!
Cool. I think if it's warm enough and they're getting as much light as they can they'll keep going, I think. The room I had mine in is pretty cold and was getting colder and I think they were coming to a halt

wow, that is a wonderous mound of chillies! i want to grow some next year

how are you planning on making it into sauce? i tried to make some chilli sauce once by just putting a load of chillis in a bottle of olive oil with some sugar but it didn't turn out so great, and i think i read somewhere that you can get botulism or something doing that?!

I've looked at a few rcipes on the net and got the general idea - I'm going to dry them out and then chop em up and steep em in cider vinegar. You can just stop at that, although some recipes seem to add spices, onion, fruit even.

Good choice, that is the best recipe I've ever found online, I've been using it for years. I substitute nice mustard for 'cheap mustard', muscovado for brown sugar, and use the best vinegar I have in, and it's always a winner.

B-bump!

The produce of my chilli crop. It is fire in a jar. I did the recipe I posted above, but without the mangoes. I may add them to de-fire-ise it a bit :D
