How were your pancakes?

Well the first three had to go in the bin, but once I got the hang of it, and well, the pan began to co-operate, they were very very nice.

That tip about waiting until the pan is almost smoking was a winner. I'm sure one of the main reasons the first couple often go in the bin is that the pan isn't hot enough. After that it's just putting the right amount of mixture in.

I didn't have time last night, so I've only just had some pancakes this lunchtime... :)

Round one: two with lemon juice and brown sugar, one with yoghurt and chopped banana, then a mini one with a bit of chocolate on.

Round two: skipped the remaining options of blueberries or golden syrup, and decided to stick with the unbeatable lemon juice and brown sugar.

(-I'm now feeling a bit full up at... :o )

PS: I didn't burn or bin any!!

In Tesco's I saw a bottle with flour and stuff in, you add milk up to the line then shake for perfect pancake batter. Kinda makes the point of pancake day a bit obsolete, but hey.

I went to Asda on Shrove Tuesday a couple of years ago and they had removed most of the flour from the shelves and replaced it with pancake mix! A mix which you add water and an egg to... so how hard is it to weigh out some flour and add milk and an egg?

I didn't make any yesterday cos I got back from work late and the pub seemed a better choice. I make pancakes all year round though so it's no great loss :)

Had them North American style - thick, fluffy, made with buttermilk and covered in maple syrup. Yum! :)

we're having them today because of our smelly house situation.... (as seen in general)...

But my pancakes always go to shit. It's piss-fuck annoying cos generally I'm quite a good cook, but my pancakes are always cer-rap.

My vegetable pancake bake was great.

But stupidly I forgot to leave any pancake mix to do sweet pancakes, so I'll just have to have pancakes again tomorrow...

Make a tomato sauce with lots of veg in.
Make pancakes.
In each pancake put vegetables, taken out of the sauce with a slotted spoon.
Put the rolled-up pancakes in a baking dish.
Any sauce left at the end goes over the top.
Thin slices of brie on top.
Oven till brown.

Do you do pancake day in Canada?

Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, or what have you, isn't a solely British phenom.

Plus, my grandmother was Irish, and she's the one built the expectation into me.

I know Shrove Tuesday isn't, ie Mardi Gras and all that, it was the pancake element I wasn't sure of.

I can't speak for all canadians, but I think it's known for sure amongst anyone with any UK heritage.

...........

Shrove Tuesday is the term used in the United Kingdom[1], Ireland[2], and Australia[3] to refer to the day after Shrove Monday (or the more old fashioned Collop Monday) and before Ash Wednesday (the liturgical season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday). In these countries, particularly Ireland, and amongst Anglicans, Lutherans and possibly other protestant denominations in Canada, this day is also known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday, because it is customary to eat pancakes on this day.[4][5][6] In other parts of the world—for example, in historically Catholic and French-speaking parts of the United States and elsewhere—this day is called Mardi Gras. In areas with large Polish-immigrant populations (for example, Chicago and Detroit) it is known as Paczki Day. And in areas with large German-immigrant populations (for example, Pennsylvania Dutch Country) it is known as Fasnacht Day or Fauschnaut Day.

I agree, and that's something I already knew, and my pancakes were perfect. Unfortunately, we have got a new battery in our smoke alarm, and the fucking thing kept going off!

Isn't Pancake Day the day before Lent, so that we all stuff ourselves in preparation for our "fasting" during Lent?

Or something like that. I didn't pay much attention during "Scripture" lessons, except when I got to draw pictures.
