To be honest when I've been disturb by parties it is never music that's the issue. It's party goers talking loudly in the garden or out the front talking and smoking usually.
Voices are more penetrative than music in my opinion.
I doubt it was all packed up but at least half the guests had left (including me) and the music had been toned down to mere background sounds probably about half an hour before I'd gone (some time before 12).

The ones that used to annoy me involved thunderous decibels requiring everyone to go into the garden and shout at each other to make themselves heard. Fucking ageing raver wankers.

Really? I think its fairly common for people to be able to zone out music and sleep. I used to play heavy metal music to get to sleep when i was a teenager. So long as the music is consistent the brain can't be programmed to tune out repetitive noises.
However when it comes to speech the brain is wired up to try and interpret what its hearing (even when its muffled) and so doesn't tune out. Plus its never a steady drone but full of changes in tone etc.
Hah the co-incidences. House party two doors up is still playing music at 2am. Should i knock the door and show them this thread?
I thought they were packing up at 12:15 when they started playing a tune from Titanic. time to go folks or the next song will be that one from Costner's Robin Hood.
Since then we've had classics from Michael Jackson, Pet shop boys and Boyzone. I don't object to the noise but school discos are usually over at 8 pm.
