How to take pictures of the sun?

I took my picture of Venus passing the Sun by photographing the scene through one of the lens from a cheapo 'eclipse watching' pair of sunglasses.

nice picture! I'll see what my cheapo knock off sunglasses can produce :D

There a nice stone/proper built one down here in Penwith...constructed by that dude that does works that can be seen by satellite...I ferget the name...and tbh keep forgetting to go see it in RL.

Anyways...I'm off out...to enjoy the first blue & windyless sky since Crimbo.

Thanks Bosky. I might shoot down to Penwith to see it when I am next door in Devon. I like an excuse to cross the border.

It won't work with sunglasses, unless you stop the camera right down and hope for the best. You have to shoot in manual too.

I have no idea what you just said :) :D

I think I have a large bit of slightly darkened glass at home, would that work?

At the risk of incuring Bosky's wrath again  :p

I believe that space blankets are made of mylar (metalised PET film).

You could try a couple of layers of that over the objective.

No, because:
(a) you have to use near-black glass
(b) the camera's auto expose function will almost certainly not be able to capture the image correctly. You need to massively underexpose the scene.

Another way to reduce the light is to use a piece of thin card with a small pinhole in it and fix it over the lens. This effectively gives a small aperture. The great thing about digital cameras is that you see the results of experiments straight away and can do variations until you get it right.

I know it's not my camera camera,I just want to be able to take photos of say,a scenerey with the sun and just a yellow circle, not a big bright flare type thing. (without spending too much on it,I don't care that much :D )

side note, that red blur above the sun, that is just flare isn't it. Cos it came out in the negative aswell.

She was either incredibly wrong,or incredibly right.
you gotto check these things ain't ya :D

the only reason I asked,is cos it looked out of place,it didn't seem to "go with the flow"(pluss it showed up on the negative) of the suns rays. And it's different to the sun flare in the bottom of the picture. But,I know precisly fuck all about photography,or what strange effects can be produced by snapping the sun.
