How to start a cycling group thing? (or does such a thing already exist?)

Twas a joke young squire. Twas a joke.

Really I am just going to sit around, stare out of the window and generally wait for death.

I know mate, I know :( - re: death.. however bollocks was it a joke, the only thing different between that and your real life is that it'll be Snatch instead of scrabble ;)

Why don't you come on the bike ride then? It'll be smashing!

I was thinking of doing the greenwich ride on Sunday, but I think I'll more than likely do my usual Crystal Palace to Keston ride instead, I'm still building up my fitness and will just get stressed if i'm trying to keep up with lots of fitter riders....Hopefully soon I'll be fit tneough to keep up with everyone :)

I'd be up for this kind of thing. are we talking road rides? or mountain bike type stuff? only, my mountain bike has a chain that is rusted solid

but yeah, sign me up.

I've just returned from a lovely ride from Crystal Palace to Keston in Kent.

About 20 miles, done at a leisurely pace with lots of stopping and looking at woodlands and hedgerows and feeding horses in about 2.5 hrs.

I would really recommend it if you want to get out into the countryside without hopping on a train.

:)

These light evenings are perfect for cycling about
i've just come back tired but happy from a brilliant ride, I did 20 miles, went from New Cross into Ladywell followed the cycle route for a bit into Croydon, then up to Crystal Place (althought i could'nt manage the hill:o :D ) and then down into Dulwich, through Peckham ending up back at New Cross. :)

that hill's a b'stard, I can manage it up to about halfway, then end up walking.

Did you go down college road and then into east dulwich? Its a nice route. :)

In case anyone's interested, here are the next Pollards Hill Cyclists rides:

Sunday 7th May 2006 - THE MINT AT BANSTEAD
Using quiets roads and London Cycle Network routes, we'll head to Nonsuch
Park for coffee and cakes. Then we'll skirt past the breath-taking Epsom
Downs on the way to the rural Mint pub at Banstead for lunch. The return
will be a swift descent via Oaks Park towards Beddington Park and back along
the off-road path to Mitcham Common. 28 miles.

Sunday 14th May 2006 - PETTS WOOD
Following parts of the Waterlink Way, we'll head to Beckenham Place Park for
mid-morning coffee and then cut through suburbia to Chislehurst Caves and on
to Petts Wood through Jubilee Country Park. Lunch at one of the pubs near
the station. Back through Norman Park and along whichever quiet roads take
our fancy. 29 miles.

Sunday 21st May 2006 - DENBIES VINEYARD
A ride along Stane Street, the ancient Roman Road, to the UK's largest
vineyard. We'll use residential streets to Sutton and then onto Nonsuch Park
for our first stop. A series of bridleways leads us to Epsom where we pick
up the undulating stony Stane Street byway all the way to Jupiter Hill near
Box Hill and then onto the cycle track into Denbies. Meals are around the
£7 mark but there's always the Ryka's greasy spoon down the road for
those who don't want to splash out. Returning via the cycle path along the
dual carriageway to Leatherhead and along a bridleway to Epsom Downs and
home via Oaks Park. It's a fairweather ride so if it's been raining, we'll
switch to the old Epsom Explorer route. A tough 30 miles.

You don't have to be a regular of Pollards Hill Cyclists (a subgroup of LCC), just a member of LCC or any member of the cycling public! :)

Apols for dredging up long dead threads, but did anything thing come out of this?

U75 leisurely bike rides out into the country? With food and beer and such?:D

Me and dirtyfruit did Brixton-Crystal Palace transmitter and back via that route the other week. Ace views, and Gipsy hill broke the speed limit :)

Proud to report that I did that hill in one push, no stopping for breaks

More bike rides!

Cycling down Gipsy Hill is one of lifes free pleasures. :) However walking up it is a bastard. I do occasionally see hardy people with massive thighs cycling up it. I almost always applaud- at least in my head :)

Yay! they are going to Greenwich which means I can slope off home after.
How fit do you have to be? Can I just ride along at the back huffing and puffing?

I only know what's on the website to be honest. I plan to go along when I get myself a bike that isn't a BMX too!

I don't enjoy going down there on a bike - too many parked cars and octagenerian Nytol abusers* in rusty toyotas edging out of side roads. The descent from the parade down to the Gypsy hill roundabout is much better, and if you're brave enough you can leave cars for dust.
:)

*of course, not all octagenarians abuse prescription drugs

Clarification - I cycled up the back way - that windy road through the trees with the cylce lane that's kerbed off in parts. Not up gipsy. That would be truly mental.

Thats college road :)

I did a cycle with Bigga and Aitch in the summer along the Thames Path - gorgeous day it was. Apart from that only done Critical Mass - would be up for more rides though, especially if I send off my application for London-Brighton

But still its a major freaking hill... there some plaudits due you! I often walk up from Paxton Green, and there is always some loon puffing his way up the hill! I feel like clapping or offering bottled water.

It always makes me laugh (when I get my breath back!) that while walking up College Road, (but especially Farquhar or Jasper Roads which you need crampons to climb) you can guarantee some git on a bike will whizz up past you!
I want to be that git some day !!:D

Can I ask- what do you say to your self in your head to motivate you to keep your legs going to get up there?

It's got flat bits!

You know, it wasn't actually that hard :o I used a fairly low gear and just got on with it. I don't train or anything, just commute 5miles each way, on the flat. I think having a half decent bike helps. I wouldn't attempt it in a £80 halfords special.

none of the approaches to CP are *that* bad. Central and Gypsy are probably the toughest but the only really hard bit of Gypsy is by the shell station where it ramps, flattens then ramps again. Salters can be a pain cos of traffic being overeager to get past. Farquar is piss, as are college and crystal palace park roads. Central is only tough at the start.

Some of the side roads that connect Anerley hill and Church Road (like Fox Hill Gardens) are proper tough though...Cintra Park is like something straight outta the Ardennes. In Crystal Palace every day is like the Tour of Flanders:D
