How to get an 86 year old 'connected'

Simplest is iPad with a data sim.

iPads have lots of accessibility options such as Assistive touch which can be configured for people who difficulty swiping and taping.

Even I have problems sorting out our wifi sometimes, I can't imagaine an internet noob would enjoy resetting ethernet connections and stuff.

Personally. I would go with either a laptop or a chromebook.

Third choice a Lenovo tablet.

I got Mrs Sas a laptop, which she used very little, when I got a new tablet, she got my old one, and uses it daily. She was used to touchscreens and onscreen keyboards with her work though.

An elderly person coming to this for the first time will likely do better with a physical keyboard I think.

Depends on the elderly person, though. My mum, for instance, was taught how to touch type as a child, as girls were back then. My dad has barely used a keyboard in his whole life. In fact I've never seen him use one.
