How to get a non believer into electronic music...

i'm pretty sure you can't "get people in to" a kind of music, i think people react against that. people have to discover stuff themselves.

yeah- i think I have been slightly moronic in my approach. Time to get crafty
it is difficult to avoid tho if yr enthusiastic about something, i've done it a million times.

Why introduce her to Electronic/dance music, it is rubbish.

I would not even call it music but I suppose it is not as crap as hip hop/rap, thats at the very bottom of 'musical' talent.

Sorry - shes into American rock, U2, classic stuff like Dylan, Willie Nelson etc. I like all that stuff too. The 'not liking dance music' thing is simpley cos she didnt grow up with it - i'm looking for a primer. Or a musical game of mornington cresent :D

Been mentioned already, but from this list Alabama 3 are the perfect entry point. Just say they're a country band from Brixton - which they are, in a sense. Someone who's into Willie Nelson and Dylan will find stuff to like in their music. But there are subtle beats and dancey bits in there too.

I think coming up with an entire playlist is a bit obvious. And stuff like Underworld and Orbital will still be too dancey for her right now. The ultimate point is that she likes song-based music. It's not about the means - guitars versus samplers - it's the form - verses and choruses versus instrumental music. I remember hearing one rock fan say, as a joke, about dance music: "Well, it's just one big drum solo, isn't it?" So if you dive straight into music that isn't song-based like Orbital, you won't have a chance.

Alabama 3. Job done.

What kind of music do you like then?

My missuz is not into electronic dance music or that with repetative beats. She's not anti music, she just doesn't get it. So I am thinking of ways to lure her into it.

How about 72 hours of non-stop country and western? She'll jig along to anything after that surely?

i was in this position. tbh, i still don't like to hear it at home. And it was pills that made me enjoy it when i'm out.

monkeygrinders played me a bit of a primer one afternoon - bits and pieces - and i got to find out which types i hated least. Then he knew which clubs i would enjoy most with the aid of pills.

btw - it doesn't have to be loads of drugs and a rave. One or two pills and a legal clubnight. To be absolutely certain, i recommend necking the first one in advance of arriving at the club - i hate that first hour if i'm not enjoying the music and i haven't come up.

And did you do an indie primer for him too?
:D

So someone saying that they don't like electronic/dance music gives you the green light to throw insults, how mature.
if you're prepared to dismiss an entire branch of music, you should be prepared for a few light insults. Same if you said rock or classical was shit

No, saying 'I wouldn't call it music' does.

I never said electro/dance was not music, that I was referring to hip hop/rap.

Anyway, I can like or dismiss whatever form of music I want, it is my own opinion and is in line with my own tastes, I don't see why my own taste/opinion on that bothers you?

Sure those two styles of music are good for some people but not me and if other people like it, so what I don't really care.

That's exactly what you said.

lulz. fat chance. Although he did once listen to the entire "greatest hits of saint ettienne" one morning, but that was in the very early days of our relationship, when he was blinded (deafened?) by lust.

he's not an indie-tolerant boy as well you know.;)
