How to fatten up a cat?

Oh dear :(

He just tried to jump up onto the sofa and couldn't make it and fell down and fell over. I've been thinking for a few days his back legs were looking weak. This is what happened to his brother. :( And the tablets to make him hungry don't seem to make him terribly hungry, although I did wonder if he's just got a smaller tummy now and gets full up more quickly?

Is he sleeping in one particular place? i only ask because skoda has not been eating recently...just turning her nose up at food in her normal eating place, but this evening i took her bowl up to her and *huzzzah* she ate it! This was right next to where she sleeps.

Legs do get weak, any previous signs of arthritis in him? Has he had his teeth checked? An old fella like him, gum disease will take it out of him, as will any infection. my vet just gives skodas's teeth a bit of a scraping, also he recently clipped her nails which has made a real difference to her on carpets.

sigh, hope he's ok mysterygirl :)

sadly there isn't a cat equivalent to fortisip ... which is a shame becasue it;s what those of us in human healthcare use to 'fatten ' people up ... as other posters have said food they like, always have biscuits out and treats to hand , cat milk as well as water on the go ... helped fatten up a 'rescued' kitten we had ...

Can I be hard? It sounds like he's fixing to go. The fact he is purring a lot might mean he is in pain. Cats purr when they're very ill. 19/20 is a very good age for a cat.

That's what I've been thinking too. But read on.

Good news about skoda eating! I find it easier to get Rover's interest by offering food where he sleeps if he's uninterested. He sleeps where i sit on the sofa, when he can evict me. Otherwise he sleeps at the other end of the sofa - never in his bed anymore though.

I've never suspected arthritis in him, apart from maybe his creaky jaw? His teeth apparently are in excellent condition.

BUT - there is Good News.

I took him back to the vet yesterday, for a check up after the first week on his new drugs. He's been looking brighter, and stronger. And I thought he felt heavier.

They weighed him. He's put on 300g in a WEEK! Thats like over 1/10th of his bodyweight, he's gone from 2.4kg to 2.7 in a WEEK!! Woooo HOOOOooooo! :D The vet was absolutely astounded, I was just over the moon!

Overall, he's suffering from Old Age, so I realise Im just delaying the inevitable. But as long as his quality of life is acceptable, that's OK. And he's brighter, stronger, more alert. I live in a first floor flat and he 'patrols' the balcony outside when he finds the weather acceptable, the patrols had dwindled to going one or maybe two doors along but they've been extended again to almost the entire length of the balcony. :)

He hasn't eaten so much today, but it's amazing how much a cat who's not hungry will eat when confronted by fresh from the oven slightly cooled chicken breast. Personally I think he holds out for it but I don't mind so long as he's eating.

He's drinking heaps more too, we have a happier household here this weekend.

Cat Watch (with soaked & softened biscuits, rice & cat food, and chicken breast) continues, but with a lighter heart. :)

zippyRN - unfortunately his stomach doesn't seem to be able to tolerate the cat milk anymore, the last couple of times I gave it to him he was very sick and he stopped drinking it altogether in the end so I don't offer it anymore. The soaked bicuits are left out all day, I've tried leaving the dry out as well but he doesn't touch them.

Another update : I took him to the emergency vet last night, he's ill. He's either got nasal tumours, in which case he has no chance, or he's got cat flu, in which case he does have a chance. His general health and his age won't help though.

So, we're treating cat flu. He's had jabs, he's got (more) medicine. He's a bit brighter than he was last night and his breathing has improved, so fingers crossed.

Its a damn good job he put on all that weight last week, I dont think he'd still be here otherwise. He's lost a little bit of weight but it is only a little bit, he was a fraction over 2.6kg last night, but he hasn't been eating like he was, not surprisingly if he's got flu, bless him.

Oh dear :( Fingers crossed for you both. Hard innit? I'm taking Skoda to the vet on Saturday, she's not been doing so well recently either. I know they don't live forever, but god :(

Hey ScallyWag, how did Skoda get on at the vet on Saturday?

I've been in for my operation, and am home now pretty disabled but able to keep a very close eye on Rover.

I think he had flu, his runny nose is pretty much gone, his breathing is almost normal, and he seems to be eating better. I cant get him to the vet for a check up, but tbh Im not that worried about it as he seems to be basically OK.

It's really weird when he gets up and wanders around, he's put on so much weight so quickly that even though he's basically still quite thin, he looks fat. And the shine seems to be coming back to his coat.

ALthough I still wish he'd eat more consistently, I feel a lot less stressed about him now. :)

Made the mistake of getting Sparky some prawns - now he sits by the fridge and howls every time anyone goes near. He belts them down, and is looking less scraggy. Can they do him any harm?

She's doing really well ta. Put on TEN whole grams since the last visit :D Not much but she ain't losing it so that's good. Basically the vet was really pleased with her, her sight has gone completely though. I really thought she would have lost weight because her eating had been really inconsistent, one day she'd scoff all of hers and then be scavenging round the other cats bowls, the next she wouldn't be interested. I put her blood pressure tablet in her food so it's important that she eats it.

Good news that Rover is doing better! :)

Oh, one thing the vet did say to watch out for is if she (or he) starts to sit with her head pulled forward (often against or facing near a wall). This can be a sign of potassium deficiency, which they can regulate.

AND hope you are feeling ok after your op. Take care!

One of my sister's young cats is prone to cistisis (sp?) and as a result has signs of kidney disease (he's only 3 bless him :() and her vet told her to stop giving him all sorts of foods including prawns. She still does but only as an occasional treat. He also told her that he shouldn't eat any meat, this cat is a killer, he has caught a crow in the past, and always eats a lot of his kills so she's a bit stuck. He's not an indoor cat so she can't keep him in, and there's no way she can stop him eating what he catches.

Have to say i lol'd at the thought of your Sparky howling by the fridge :D I have made the same mistake with 2 of mine, the rest fortunately can take or leave them. One won't anything else but biscuits (and whatever he finds outside) and the other one will have cat food for breakfast but if there's anything else in his bowl at teatime he just isn't interested.

i just googled and found this:

http://www.ah.novartis.com/cab/en/cat_kidney_failure_management_fluid_therapy.shtml

That recommends pureeing prawns in water, so i dunno. Ask your vet, but if Sparky likes them so much and they seem to be doing him some good, maybe a few now and then won't be so bad?

I see that ScallyWag has dealt with your question very well so I won't add but I've made this mistake with Rover and chicken, it was OK for a bit cos it's encouraged him to eat but the last couple of days he's refused everything except the chicken. :(

They are saying if your elderly cat likes something and will eat it that is far more important than it not eating at all!

When I took Rover to the emergency vet she was saying pretty much teh same - that chicken & tuna aren't really suitable for a cat with kidney problems but it's better for him to eat something - unsuitable or not - than nothing at all.

It's great that Skoda hasn't lost more weight! :) It's really really hard to get weight onto them. You can get it off by giving less food but you can't make them eat.. perhaps you could keep in mind the appetite-increasing medication Rover is on? Apparently it doesn't work for all cats but it seems to be OK for him?

Little Rover update : all the cat-flu medication has been finished for a few days now, I think he's over it now although Im not sure about the side effects from the medication, I think the antibiotics upset his insides and they haven't quite recovered yet; he didn't eat much yesterday or the day before but seems to be eating more today.

Feeling quite a bit more relaxed about it all now. :)

Update...

He's not eating again. Not even ham, or chicken. Or sardines for that matter. He chews but lets it fall from his mouth, as if he can't be bothered to swallow. I don't know what else to try, any ideas?

:(

How long has he not been eating for mg? A day? Or longer? Skoda has the odd day when she's off her food, just won't touch it, is eventually sick and then starts eating normally again. Maybe he's just feeling a bit like that?

Hey my cat is very similar to everything you’re describing. I know its been over 10 years so I hope I’m not bringing up any sad memories just wondering how your cat got on in the end?

Eleven years later. What happened?
