But I still reckon you're vulnerable on the tax issue. Road tax pays for roads, and a lot of other things too, as does my parking permit, the excise on the fuel and the VAT on repairs and insurance. As a driver I pay for many many things other than simply streets. I create jobs. And believe me, HM treasury and council revenue officials would miss me if I, and the other drivers, quit.
In return for this I simply ask that local authorities play fair on parking.
It's not angry or white to ask for a degree of representation with your taxation.
And for the record I do not resent being asked for lifts; it comes with the territory and besides, I enjoy the company.
Someone else has made the "Road Tax" point; it hasn't existed since before WW2, it's pretty amazing its survival in motor-mythology.
The subsidised-or-not? debate about cars is fought pretty furiously between pro and anti car lobbies. There are some well analysed studies that find car-drivers to be major net recipiants (the last one I saw was from Leeds University - but I haven't got the source handy - £20bn they reckoned as I recall)
The "angry white" thing was a jibe - fair enough - but there is something there; your initial beef was about the PO not delivering (and lets remember, while we're complaining about tax, that the reason your local PO has closed is because people "don't want to pay more taxes") - but you got on to "car-parking", "traffic wardens", "the local council", "I pay my taxes", and "other people are jealous of my car" within a post and a half; next stop your own ShockJock Slot on Talk Sport Drive Time unless you're careful....
