Compulsory eye, reaction and cognitive test every year.

Compulsory for all road users whether powered or not.

Together with Insurance.

And vehicle registration.

Is this the same pembrokestephen who believes cyclists shouldn't even be required to pass one test to demonstrate that you're competent to ride???"
Jesus H Christ, somebody change the record. This bugbear has had its day in its own thread.

I reckon we should have to retake the test when we turn 60(or 65 or whatveer retirement age is) and then every 5 years there after.

can't vote - i need more options

one rigourous test should be ok. most drivers get better with experience
not worse.

should have to re-test when you get too old or get too many points,
convictions etc. Would be good if a re-test was required for anyone
caught driving dangerously - such a nightmare to organise!

i'm not convinced that re-sitting would weed out bad drivers, though I think I_h_b's suggestion has merit.

my dad is a bad driver, has had at least 2 bans, but has never failed a driving test.

it's not driving ability that makes someone a bad driver, it's lack of consideration for other road users, and you can't measure that with a driving test.

I think that, as an initial step, any driver convicted of a serious motoring offence, or who loses his licence through "totting up", should be made to resit a test to get his licence back.
that's a requirement now though, nothing new there.

I think that the better option would be simply to rescind the licence of anyone who's banned, and get them to resit an enhanced test in order to get it back.
er, this is also a requirement these days.

i don't drive and i know this.

I took 2mg of valium for both my car and motorbike tests (both passed 1st time), took the edge off the fear and turned me into a test passing robot.

Wow... I find it hard to believe that people get that fired up about stuff like this...

I wasn't nervous at all when I took my bike test three years ago, but I was thrilled when I passed. I took my car test recently and was much more nervous about that, so I though I'd be more pleased about passing, but I was merely relieved that it was over.

The pre- and during test nerves were the best part. :D

About testing people after they've passed, I don't think it should be compulsory unless it's going to be free. The problem is, most people can revert to perfect driving to pass a test, and then go out and carry on being stupid/ dangerous after they pass again.

All it would suceed in doing is make more people drive unlicensed - and probably as a result uninsured as well.

Maybe, if all vehicles were fitted with retina scanners that checked your identification and license classification....
