How often do you replace household stuff?

Like with most others, only when it needs replacing.

Occasionally I might buy a couple of new wine glasses or something, if I think they're pretty and will make my life better (lol), but I can't really afford to be replacing things often, even if they look a bit tatty.

We bought a new washing machine last year, but the old one broke. We probably could have had it fixed, but our new one is more energy efficient etc. I'd like a new fridge/freezer, but the old one still works, it's just in a state. So I won't get one.

I really need new carpeting/flooring in the living room/dining room – it's old, threadbare, and incredibly stained and nasty. We can't afford it though, so we just don't bend down and lick it anymore.

Bedding – this is the area I've been known to be less frugal with, because I get bored easily of certain ones. I'm currently trying very very hard not to give in and buy a new set, when I've got several perfectly good ones at the moment.

Only when it really really needs replacing. We try to buy replacements which will be more energy efficient, more durable, or slightly better quality if affordable.

Only when it stops working or falls apart mostly.

I can't really see any other reason than this?

It's nice to have nice things, but sanctioning new stuff all the time for your home and chucking out the old wtf?

My Fridge is 15or20 years old and was second hand to me, echo the microwave and nearly everything else in my house. :o:D

Well lucky you - the last fridge here died after approx 8 years, (same goes for the chest freezer), the last washing machine lasted 8 years - electrical goods just aren't made to last in the same way anymore.

Which is a great shame, I suppose that's how the whole capitalism thing works though, 'they' want you to buy new and keep the economy going....

I think the older they are, the longer they last tbh. We never expected the fridge to last this long, it's covered in stickers from the student days and it's huge with proper handles...it is beige and brown though. :hmm::D

I haven't got a washing machine, I'd say 8 years was bloody good for yours to last actually, They seem to go almost as soon as the guarantee runs out from what I hear. :(

Things like:

White goods
Furniture
Bedding
Cutlery and crockery
Carpets
Curtains

The only stuff that I own out of that lot is bedding and the odd knife or pan.
Everything else is owned by the landlord and gets replaced after repeated nagging.
I bought the bedding a couple of years ago, so I expect I'll never need to replace them again, unless I meet a lass who clashes with green.

when it breaks, like most normal people. i can't repair electrical stuff, i just don't know how :(

our dinner plates are truly nasty but it would be wasteful to get rid, sadly. they seem to be unbreakable too :D

White goods-
When they break - my tumble drier was ElJugs mothers, must be over 30 years old and stillworks.
Furniture- I don't really have any, everything is fitted, I would refit if everything got battered, but it's all solid wood so I think it'll last
Bedding - if it fades lots or gets holes in or goes thin. I had a lovely linen sheet that went muslin think in the middle, then it ripped.
Cutlery and crockery - if it breaks, doesn't really happen with cutlery - some of mine is ancient, but I do use a lot of melamine crockery as opposed to pottery, because it's more practical on a boat. That kind doesn't last so long
Carpets - I have a parquet floor and rugs - I haven't had to replace them - they're washable so they stay clean.
Curtains - I have blinds. I'm about to make new ones.

I'm the same as others on here:

WG when they break. Although I am about to replace my boiler which is about 16/17 years old and is getting to be a bit too inefficient.
Furniture - have replaced my old sofa bed because it literally wore out. It had holes every where and my cat had whittled one of the legs down to resemble a matchstick :D:mad:
Bedding - have had the same bedding for 10 years. If it evers wears out then I'll replace it.
C&C - If every plate broke then I'd get a new set.
Carpets - These desperately need replacing, they're well manky. They're about 20 years old though. Am thinking about putting in wooden floors, although I've been thinking this since I moved in 8 years ago so I'll probably still be thinking the same in another 8 years time :D
Curtains - I got custody of the curtains from my old place after I split up with my ex and they're fine so no need to replace them anytime soon. They're really good quality as well so I hope they'll last for years.
