How much would you pay for a mattress?

stevepinker said:
Surely that would mean you never have to buy another one

Well, you never know, I could:

* Live for more than another 25 years

or

* Piss myself horrendously tonight

I would never pay more than £350 , Cause no matter how well made it is after a few years its going to stink of sweat, sex and in my case pizza

I have a mattress cover. I wash it every few months. :)

We spent just under £1000 on our Tempur mattress and it was worth every penny. I used to suffer mild but nagging back and neck pains and now they're gone. I bought a couple of Tempur pillows too, made of the same stuff as the mattress. They're ace.

You have to get used to sleeping on them as they're not at all "bouncy". In fact sitting on one initially feels like sitting on a padded bench, very firm. After a few seconds however, ones body heat changes the form and you settle in. Mrs Spy reckons the sensation is like sleeping on plastecine.

Haven't noticed either being too hot though.

Wiskey - who are L&F?

Litvinoff and Fawcett - a hackney based hand made bed makers (with a pants website). i went to them and warren evans and found WE a bit to slimy for my liking (they have a showroom full of pebbles  ) but L&F have a nice bloke that runs it, and they are comparatively cheap but findamentally for me they would raise the bed up by 8 inches free :D

i can sit on the edge of my bed and swing my legs :D

L&F fired my useless bf

Still, he deserved it. Did make paying the rent a bit tricky though

i found them completely unhelpful when we were sat in their showroom bouncing on beds, perhaps we didnt look like proper bed buyers. and in fact i was less than enthusastic whe we set off for WE, i guess i'd been taken in by WE's swish website and smooth talking writeups. however when we got to camden i was immediately convinced i wouldnt give them a penny. they were so smarmy. and there seemed to be hidden costs.

i'll take slightly surly people ignoring me over smarmy people dripping all over me any day.

I paid £270 for mine, from Ikea. It is very comfy and came with a 25 year guarantee.

That sounds about the same as ours.

We got one of those mattress pads to go on it too which is great cos I can just throw the pad on the washing line to give it an airing.

Tempur are those weird memory foam ones that mold to your shape. They creep me out.

Someone told me they can make some people feel unwell cos of the chemicals that come off them.

We've got a really good one that cost about £600 - and that was cheaper than normal because it was end of range, or something. It's fantastic and well worth the money.

£500-600, maybe more.

We've got a dunlopillo one, I think that's what we paid for it. It's really comfortable.

We originally bought a midrange sprung mattress because we couldn't quite bring ourselves to pay the Dunlopillo price, and almost immediately wished we'd bought the Dunlopillo. A few years later we finally got round to treating ourselves and the sprung one got demoted to the lodger's room.

As well as being really comfortable, the other really good thing about Dunlopillo mattresses is that you don't have to turn them.

I got mine in 1998 - I decided to spend as much as I could possibly stretch to at the time. Waited for the January sales and bought a Dunlopillo Charisma (I'm not sure they make them under that name now). It's 'firm' and it doesn't need turning. No lumps or bumps, feels the same as it did back then - a bit like trashpony's description really (so I don't know why I've repeated it :o :D ). I never want to have back problems caused by or exacerbated by a bad mattress tbh, I'd sooner do without other furniture first. I think it was about £700 - can't remember exactly - in the sale and it was on one of those interest free credit things over a year.

Mine cost something like that. I said in the shop that I thought it was a lot of money for a mattress but the salesman pointed out that people happily spend that amount or more on a settee that they don't spend half as much time on. I've had it for about 5 years now and it's still really comfy. :)

They're meant to be amazing once you get over the initial weirdness, anyone on here got one?

I have 2. The one in my bedroom is kingsize 10" deep and comes covered in a material which helps control the temperature so you don't get too hot. It was £360 on ebay.

I also have one in my guest room, which my parents bought for their visits as they hate to sleep on anything else. And I have a 2" topper on my futon to make it super comfy.

My parents bought one about 6 years ago when they first came out and they're complete converts, they also keep a topper in their camper van as they are away in that alot. And last year my hubbie and I bought one for his dad as he has really bad back problems, and he hasn't stopped raving about it since.

We're like some weird memory foam cult.

But I'd advise buying them on ebay, the double one in my spare room was only £167, though it doesn't have the temperature control cover.

Id pay up to a £1000 for a decent bed with divan base and mattress

You spend a lot of time in bed best to get one that is comfy and top notch

I bought one of these

to go with one of these:

because I needed a new bed on a budget.

Unfortunately, the bed lasted 4 weeks before I had to buy some repair plates (and before anyone asks, yeah I know I've broken beds before, but I haven't got a fat girlfriend now so this is definitely bad workmanship this time, lol), *however* despite the price, the mattress has given me the best sleep I've had in years!

I have a tempur mattress they are amazing and i now sleep very well..maybe too well, i cant wait to get into bed at night, you either love them or hate them.. my friend used to sleep in my bed when she stayed over but wont now, she sleeps on the floor as she says it freaks her out, it cost about £850 in the sale.

I bought a super-ergonomic Tempura memory-foam weird-pillow a while back.......

It sucked.

I gave it a month, and I didn't sleep well once; it gave me shoulder, neck and upper back ache and made me snore like a raped-pig.

I tossed it in the cupboard and got a single "normal" pillow instead and now everything is fine.

It was the worst 50 quid I have ever spent.

I'm such a berk. I forget things like this even exist and so assume I can't afford anything

Lots of advice here though :)

£30 down the elephant and castle was good enough 3 years ago. might need changing now, for just another £30. why all these silly prices quoted: confused:

I brought a memory foam mattress a few weeks ago. Fantastic!

Not too hot. Very comfortable.

I think it was from snug mattresses dot co dot uk (or something like that).

About £200 with free memory foam pillows as well.

Now I can't get the wife out of bed!:D
