How much should a 15yr old get paid?

But your implying people who are doing work as experioence/learing should just put up with shit wages !

15 or 25 it doesn't matter , good wages should be paid !
Not at all. People who do voluntary work, placements to add to their CV or to gain experience without pay all the time. I have done so.

It is up to people to make their own mind up if they are prepared to work for no pay - they can decide the costs and benfits of doing so for themselves.

There is no obligation on anyone to pay them - it is up to people to make their own mind up what they want to offer and accept.

£3-5 per hour in any number of other jobs?
So he had another job to go to and was only interested in the money - fine, then he can choose to switch to that job.

If an organisation or company offers a placement to someone without pay (or only a small amount of money) they are within their rights to make the offer and people are within their right s to make their own mind up whether to accept or decline. There is no "should pay" about it. Minimum wages apply to a regular job and are varied by age but this looks like a placement, not a proper job.

firstly, in what way does it look like a placement rather than an proper job?

secondly, while it is certainly true that worthwhile opportunities for unpaid work do exist, it is also true that for each one there exists at least one, but probably many that are merely scams to obtain slave labour. it is interesting that you are reluctant to acknowledge this.

"...a lady at work has a 15 year old son,who did his work experience at a motor garage..."

Seems like they are just offering to extend his work experience period.

Slave labour? Fuck off!

If someone voluntarily works for no (or almost no) money then that is their choice. I have done shit loads of voluntary, unpaid work. It is in no way, shape or form "slave labour". x lots

No it seems like they want to hire a hard worker for next to nothing ! If they wanted to extend his work experience I think they would have said something alonmg the lines of " Would you like to extend your work experience , we will pay you £5 a day " . It's still unclear as to what the motivation behind that would be and exactly how much he would be learning , both sides are arguing based on interpreation of what we know ! I can understand your point of view but I still feel £5 a day is too little !

Thats bollocks , if someone has no choice but to work for low wages then they can be exploited !

Are you unfamiliar with the concept of wage slavery

There's a big difference for doing unpaid voluntary work for a charitable institution which couldn't afford to pay you otherwise and getting paid fuck all for working for a garage. Particularly when a survey found out yesterday that the average rate they charge in the South East is over £100 an hour.

It's exploitation, pure and simple.

if they have not given the impression that they wish to employ him rather than just extending the work experience, why would he be surprised be the meagerness of the pay? your assumptions could be correct, but they have little basis.

that you feel so about the unpaid work that you have done hardly defines the case in general does it? You say yourself that you did such work as a recent graduate, for a start, which means that you were in a relatively much stronger position in the labour market.

It is certainly the case that people with very poor earning prospects may be tricked into working for even less than they might otherwise command by empty or overblown promises of training and experience (both of which, as I have said, are also gained in paid employment).

As I have said, I don't discount the possibility of the scenario you assume, but you do seem to discount the possibility of exploitation, and I wonder why.
