How much overtime do you work and do you mind?

My role means I work with business that only open Mon-Fri, 9 - 5:30. I have done overtime before but now if any is required it works like an unofficial flexi-time so pretty good.

All of it? Are you the only IT person? Do you have little work to do?

There are two of us here, looking after 30 odd people and some remote people.

So yes, all of it. The other guy here that works for me does about the same as me every day (films, MP3's etc:)) but he doesn't look after Servers, Telecoms, Network, Firewalls etc, I do. The buck for everything stops with me....

Everything here works, as it should do. Thats why we can sit here and watch films etc, in IT, unless you have some project or something broken, you shouldn't really have anything to do apart from say 30 mins changing tapes, checking logs etc...

We've been told off/shouted at in the past, we just say: erm.. everything works, nothing is outstanding, wtf are we supposed to do? act busy? Now they have come round to the mentality that if we are watching films or whatever, everything is running as it should be.

If something goes wrong... we'll be here till its fixed, regardless how late it gets or how long it takes....

Aahhh I see.

Everything always seems to fuck up where my bf works and there's always stuff that needs doing.

I'd love to explain it all for you but I can't cos I don't understand compooter stuff :o

Apart from when I was drunk and he was telling me all about Microsoft being taken to court for having too much monopoly over ....stuff and ...the thing....delaying IT progress by making everything secret...

Yeah

It's not that we're lazy mind :)

There's rumour of us moving office and we can't wait to get our teeth into a big project, it can get a bit boring just chilling out most days:cool:

Yes - there's a difference between abit adaptable and taking the piss.

But taking the piss seems to be becoming the norm rather than exception. One job I eventually told them to shove, I immediately stopped doing all tasks except those that were within my own dept. I had my feet on the desk playing computer games at 3.30 every day :D

I do around 16->20hours extra a week. All unpaid and no time in leu. I dont like it, but my boss refuses to give me any extra staff, so im doing 2 jobs at once effectively. But, i need the job, so have no choice in the matter until something else turns up.

None - I already work a statutory 8 and a half hour (as opposed to 8-hour) day, I don't get paid overtime, and I refused to be cowed by the idea I'll be marked out as a laggard for leaving on time. I do what I do in the time allowed, and if it's substandard, that's me being crap, not me not working long enough hours. ;)

Generally, the time-sensitive thing in my work is sending publications to the printers; but they'll be shut after 5 or 6 anyway, so you might as well do your final checks the next morning properly, rather than in a panic, and send it then; won't make any difference to the ultimate outcome time-wise.

I used to work for a big firm where they expected me to work hours and hours of overtime. I got called back from the pub once at 9pm. It was ingrained in the culture.

So I quit and now I work for a different firm where they expect you to have a home life. I do work overtime but usually only a few hours a week. If I do a lot, I take unofficial time off. And we quite often go to the pub at 3pm on Fridays too if it's quiet ;)
