How much of a mess is your home?

I need some electrical work doing and would like to have my combi boiler replaced, but a house is always a work in progress, isn't it?

On the tidiness front, I've recently tidied my spare bedroom / study by fitting cable trays to my desk. This means that the cables no longer lie on the floor where they gather dust. Besides that, every so often I have a major sift of paperwork. This involves getting everything out into piles onto the living room floor. At which point the door-bell goes... :D

Ours looks good at the moment if you don't go in my bedroom and ignore the piles of camping stuff on the spare bed.

It needs lots doing though. The windows were badly fitted and a couple have awful draughts. The heavy rain last winter has ruined my bedroom walls and damp has wrecked my beautiful and expensive wallpaper.

The bath is scratched and stained and desperately needs replacing or enameling as it's so old. We need a new front door, it's not secure at all. Luckily we have a porch we can lock but that's a pain for deliveries.

I've noticed the wallpaper in the lounge is peeling too. Hopefully the damp is sorted because we have insulation now but I'm not holding my breath.

We've spent quite a lot of money decorating and replacing flooring but it's not our house and I can't afford it any more.

Despite all that, I do love our house and it could be absolutely beautiful. If it was mine I'd do so much with it but if I had the money to buy it, I probably wouldn't as I know all its problems. :D

Move to Aleppo, it will be cheaper to fix.

A friend, who is very messy, said our house looks like a squat. He meant it as a compliment because he thinks it's good we're so scruffy. I hadn't heard the word scruffy in a while and I thought yes, that's me. I hate cleaning, only do it when we're getting visitors or when it really starts bugging me.

Moved in four years ago. House needs complete renovation but we've only done one room. I also hate diy and mr nags only likes fixing bikes. Neighbour's son came round the other day to play and said his mum had said that our house is broken down and someone should fix it. Our neighbours do diy every weekend without fail.

My house is extremely clean, tidy and organised now. But I used to have loads of people round all the time before, when my place was a tip, and these days I never have anyone round, so there isn't anyone who can testify to the change, grr.

Mine is currently a shithole. There is a standoff going on over washing up….. Housemates girlfriend created a pile of washing up on saturday and then fucked off without doing it.

Housemate isn't doing it as its not his, and I'm not doing it as its not mine and I'm fed up of having to do all of ours sometimes.

It's your housemate's guest's mess, ergo it's his mess.

Next week I shall give more details but mine was very Kim and Aggie. You had to turn sideways to get through some rooms and the spare room, now my bedroom, was so bad you couldn't get the door open. I've posted photos of my interiors this evening, albeit some cats on a rug or two but I couldn't have considered that on the spur of the moment even six months ago cos it was still bad but not shocking. I know I've come a very long way but try telling other people that when to them it still looks tip-ish in places.

So I got some money for my birthday and using towards having my lounge re-plastered. We have had to strip wallpaper off, rip off a dado rail that was painted silver, hack off some bad plaster patch jobs and rip away some skirting board. Getting a plasterer was difficult, I was first given a number from a friend and he said his phone was running out of battery so would call me back & never did. I then went on mybuilder.com and only one person out of 5 that I invited was interested in the job and he came & gave me a eye watering quote. I then asked a colleague whom is somebody who knows everybody and she gave my number to this fella whom called me soon after, came round and turned out he did my neighbours house as the he is best friends with my neighbours brother. He gave me a quote that didn't cause palpitations and he starts on Friday at 7.30am..:)

The plan is to add a picture rail and paint onto the walls. I'm favouring yellow but BF thinks it's too sleepy!

Well I did say I would post some horror photos. There's just one for now until I find more images.
What was my dining cum front cum one of many junk rooms...

The before is about 4 years ago and frankly that is better than it was at its worst. I still have a lot to do. Painting to do and curtains to make but I reckon I've done pretty well all things considered.

Well done Mogden, you clearly have come a long way. Good work
Thank you! It's also to show it can be done. I have done a happy dance a few times about the state of things now. Some would say I should be too ashamed to post up the before photos but it is a reflection of my mind at the time and shows how much I have cleaned up in all ways.

the general status of our house is clean-ish but not massively tidy. no kids or pets helps. it doesn't get too bad in terms of clutter as a lot of it hasn't yet been unpacked (we've only been in the house a year and a half!). i cba to dust and hate vaccuming, but am fairly good about cleaning the bathroom and kitchen. we have a new lovely cooker so try really hard to clean that at least once a week. at our old place we also had a new (built-in) cooker and though we weren't complete slobs it's fair to admit that when we left after about 7 years the cooker no longer looked anywhere near new. don't want that to happen to our fancy one that we bought with our own actual money!

we only really have a proper tidy in anticipation of guests. mr SB takes it further than me though, i would happily just give the kitchen and bathroom a cursory wipe/vac, pile the washing up and clutter neatly and consider it job done, but he needs it done properly. but nice to have it lovely for a brief while afterwards at least.

in terms of the state of the house, we've done the essentials: bathroom, kitchen, one bedroom. the bathroom was horrific before and the kitchen and bedroom really needed doing but were technically livable. the place is a real do-er-upper so we'd budgeted to do work immediately. it wasn't all that immediate though, took 6-9 months to get those three rooms to 80-90% done, and they kitchen and bathroom still have 5% to go (all jobs my other half has decided to do himself).

we still have a box-room (full of boxes, actually not small thankfully as there is a lot of junk, mostly his). he has just got a shed so i am full of anticipation of a lot of his valuable items (junk) being moved and/or actually sorted and put away properly. especially the indeterminate items which are probably diy or gardening related but from my point of view just don't belong in the house!

My drum is pristine. Just don't look in the loft. Or the garage where all my hoarding sins are hidden away.

A new garage roof and a loft extension with solar roof panels are planned.

sitting on the sofa with my missus the other day we could overhear the neighbours hoovering again. "they must hoover every other day" said my missus, "surely their flat can't need that much hoovering. We only do ours every other week". i asked her when "we" hoovered, seeing as i'd be willing to bet she doesn't even know where the hoover lives. "alright, but YOU hoover every couple of weeks" i said that i haven't hoovered in about at least a month, which is why the floor is crunchy and we;ve moved the welcome mat to the hallway so that you can wipe your feet leaving the kitchen.

she hadn't noticed, bless her.

we've achieved a state of utter filth at below knee level. there are trails in the gerbil sawdust and sand that indicate the most common routes walked by human beings. there is a gerbil nest in the sofa. our filing method has become piles. one of them collapsed and blocked the route to the bathroom so we step over it. but because we keep tripping over it there's junk everywhere. with gerbils hiding in it.

My place is extremely messy in some parts.

I moved in seven years ago and the small bedroom is full of stuff still in boxes and bags that I've not unpacked, together with laundry bags of my clothes (I don't have a wardrobe).
I also have a couple of bags of books and three plastic crates of CDs in my living room/ kitchen that I've tried to hide with a large piece of material because I don't really know where to put them - I do have a bookcase but too many books for it
The rest of the area and my bedroom are reasonably tidy - the bed is the only furniture I have (though there are more books hidden under there!) plus a large plant and a mirror.

I really need to have a good sort out but I prefer to go out at weekends and in the evening after work I'm too tired :(

Some cable tv channel could come in here and make a decent and horrifying show about hoarding. No joke.

My house currently looks like ive been burgled...had the ex removed from my house buy the police on monday..so currently filtering out his shit...
