How much is bus travel in your area?

Most of the bus services here don't give change!

Quite often if the driver hasn't got enough change they'll let me stay on until enough people have paid and he can give me my 8 quid something (or whatever it is). Once or twice I've even got a free journey out of it

I like Sheffield :)

Don't ever, ever, ever think of giving a bus driver in Bristol a £20 note! You will be thrown off with a flea in your ear (if you are lucky).

One of the good things about dethinging the buses in Leeds, is they've (eventually) realised they have to be a bit more polite to the passenger.

Gone are the days when trying to use a fiver meant a tourettes explosion from some grumpy mal adjusted fucker. Then again when fares are so high, they can't really complain.

I seem to remember bus drivers in Brighton being particularly arsey to teenagers and young women (mind you, I was a teenager and a young woman, so perhaps they were arsey to everyone!)

I remember getting on a Yorkshire Rider Bus in about 1989 and paying for two 45p tickets with a £1 coin. The bus driver nearly exploded with rage shouting, "Haven't you f**king students got any change?"

glasgow buses don't give change. they are also rubbish.

my local bus used to stop at 5.30pm :(

whoever in glasgow city council though that a pub closing time of midnight but closing the tube and winding down the bus service at 11.30 was a good idea is an idiot.

:eek::D

I nearly got run over on a pedestrian crossing by one deranged loon who then proceeded to give me abuse after he went through a red light.

There's a lot of anger involved in being a Leeds bus driver??

If first and stagecoach aren't running a de facto monopoly in most areas then I'm a monkey's uncle.

the fuckers

They are - Running one or two minor routes in each others operating areas in not competition in my book.

Neither is farming-out night bus services to a wholly owned subsidiary!

Only with an oyster though. £2 single flat rate without one.

I remember when I moved to London 6 years ago, bus fare outside zone 1 was 70p flat rate.

Actually it's 90p now. And the oyster cap (the max you can pay) is £3. £3.50 is the cost of a paper bus pass.

I overheard a couple of women discussing tube fairs in Orpington recently. They were complaining of the unaffordability of traversing central London: "£4 each way on the tube!". People complained about the size of Livingstone's communications spending, but evidently they 'cheaper with oyster' message still hasn't reached some parts...

OK, just checked, unless this is still out of date it's still 90p (I thought there had been a hike). Not that I'd probably notice if it did get hiked a bit, as you just bip your card and get on.

All cities should adopt the TFL model. Central control of routes timetables and fares. Competition for route franchises, based on performance.

I suggested that to the first bus office here and was told that in London I was 'spoilt'

if the drivers here don't have change they give you a ticket as a refund against another journey. seems like a scam cos I never remember to us it next time.

That's really sad :(
The powers for creating a TFL-like organisation would come with an elected mayor, but I don't think anywhere outside London has taken that option yet.

BoJo's gonna hike up the fares next year though :(

A single tube fare paid with an Oyster card will rise from £1.50 to £1.60, while a single Oyster card bus fare will increase from 90p to £1, a one-day bus and tram pass will rise from £3 to £3.30, and a weekly pass will go up by 80p to £13.80.

The £4 adult cash fare in zone one of the tube will be frozen, while the fare in other zones will go up from £3 to £3.20. The minimum adult cash fare on the Docklands Light Railway rises from £1.50 to £1.60. Peak adult day travelcards will rise from £5.30 to £5.60 for zones one and two, while those for zones one to six will increase from £13.80 to £14.80

Ah, that's where I must have got it from, what's going to happen rather than what's happened. Good good, I'm not going mad. :)

You still ARE a young woman :p

I think it's £1.10 to get into the local town from here, which is better value than going from one area to down town apparently, but our bus company isn't stagecoach :) And the route is probably heavily subsidised coz it's rural.

Am I the only person to be outraged that a peak one day travelcard for 1 to 6 is almost FIFTEEN bloody quid now?

Not all of us who are in Zone 6 are living in posh suburban housing. There are many poor bits in Zone 6 too.

I don't bother with Oyster as my nearest station is on National rail, but then get stung if I need to use the bus. £2 quid is shocking.

You could always have an oyster card with a small amount of pre-pay on for the bus.

Totally.

There is not a single londoner who should have a valid reason for not having an oyster with a bit of prepay on it.
(alright maybe a few, but PacificOcean's not one of them!)

i noticed on the metropolitan line today, that there are now zones 7, 8, and 9, when did they come in? and how much is a travel card for 1-9 zones ?

Weren't those zones A-D before?

They were renamed when TFL took over the Silverlink Metro local trains between Euston and Watford. A travelcard for Zone 1 to 9 (Amersham and Chesham) is £13.80 in the peak and £8.20 during the day, but even this is cheap compared to a Travelcard to Watford Junction which is closer to London than any of Zone 9, but offically is outside the zones (despite Watford Met being in Zone 7 and Watford High Street in Zone 8) where a peak travelcard is £17.80 and an off peak one is £13.10. Thank you London Midland

In Watford on the red TFL routes the 142 to Stanmore, Edgware and Brent Cross and the 258 to Harrow it's 90p flat fare on Oyster, on the local green Arriva buses the cheeky beggers in the course of the past year have bumped up the price of a day ticket from £2.50 to £4

Not sure, but for me from now on it's fuck all. You see, I've just managed to get myself a disabled bus pass due to my epilepsy preventing from driving, which entitles me to free local bus travel anywhere in England.
