How much does a funeral cost?

Ditto, I mentioned it yrs ago and got told off for being morbid but why not?? Hubby is a joiner for goodness sake, why pay extra when I could go down the timberyard and get enough wood for both of us for about £100??

It is a bit more than just wood - IIRC there is actually a standard that coffins must comply with, depending on the purpose they are intended for - a cremation coffin being the lowest but where one is going in the ground, they have to be sturdy enough to remain leakproof for several years & for longer still if they are going in a vault etc. Even where cardboard is concerned.

Most coffins in the UK are made from chipboard & plastic now apparently so it can't be that high.

where do you find this info?

mmm

fancy posting up some links mate?

and owt you might have about rules and regs

i really don't think you should have to pay a small fortune for burying/cremating someone

This is OTOH from @two years ago - Any links will be on my old machine that is sitting through the house.

I'm remembering it from the reporting of the court case about the cardboard coffins - The funeral trade really tried hard to block them/DIY funerals when they first became practical (late 90s?) Looked like a big threat to threat to their moneymaker?

(madamv is always very helpful on these matters, btw! )

I thought Stig did a thread about green burials too, but I can't find it :hmm: ...I'm sure it was on that one that drfranni wrote about her mum saying they ought not to make a fuss and that she'd like to be driven to the crematorium in a hackney carraige and drfranni saying to her 'You'll have a hessian sack and a minicab and be grateful!'...or something like that... :D

It's for going in the fire :p

How about a skip then:

Yes, seems the UK's largest source of environmental mercury pollution is from the crap materials used for coffins. :(

Mines going to cost about 2k. 1200 for the box and burning 800 behind the bar for a good send-off. I've priced up all my kit with price stickers and if people pay me for what my left-overs are worth then i should break even.

My brother asked me only last week if he could have my Martin guitar when i popped it. We agreed on £500 cash;)

You have to have these things covered ime;)
