I'm not keen on Vista. It's slow as fuck and out of the box it looks fucking hideous, I've set it on 'Classic' and I can live with that.

Depends on your hardware... with the proper spec, as I've said, it's faster than XP.

It's like saying XP is slow as fuck when used on underpowered hardware.

That said, if a machine is supplied with Vista and is underpowered from the off, then I can appreciate why it might be seen as slow.

As for the looks, I really like them. XP looks awful now (as posted from my heavily skinned XP Home machine...)

I'm using Vista - on a new computer that came with it installed - and I quite like it.

Tbh I'm not all that bothered about the bells and whistles it might or might not have. It runs everything I use, and it's user-friendly enough.

Came on my new laptop, which has slowly edged out my old, shit XP machine

same as me, liking it so far,
tho some over-protective bollx built in,
however I'll probably partition the lappy with xp,
as the compatibility with old apps is rubbish :(

Hmmh seen some benchmarks of games that suggest otherwise, even crysis the much touted directx10 title works better on xp under dx9 with the hack to make it work.

As for day to day stuff I dont know how vista or xp could be any faster, all my apps load pretty much instantly.

I wouldn't know re: games to be honest, I'm just talking about the feel of day to day use. Maybe I'm just swayed by the 'instant on' styles of Vista which isn't that much faster than 'hibernate' in XP anyway.

My son reports that his Americas Army game has gained about an extra 15 fps since I put the Service Pack on yesterday.Thats on a built in GFX chip though so people with high end cards might not notice a difference much.Theres definitely an improvement on the overall running of the computer. When the User Control box comes up to ask for permissions it used to hang for a second but it's instant now.Overall I'm pretty pleased with this SP1 release.

I'd double check those issues if I were you before deciding, They may have been fixed or workarounds found.

There's a good article here in the Guardian which addresses the audio issues.

Personally I haven't noticed any difficulties - but then I'm just a "normal" user. Unless you're doing serious studio stuff, I don't think it'd be an issue.

Interesting stuff. Think I'd still be tempted to go for XP, and maybe upgrade to Vista in a year or two.

If I was paying for an os I may be tempted by vista rather then fork out again in future, but its easier to find ways around xp.

Now running on Vista on my 1GB A64 3500+ and my brand new c2d machine, as well as my laptop.

Can't fault it on all three installations, and actually runs surprisingly fast on the old desktop. Really can see now reason why I'd want to go back to XP.

pologies but i was looking for somewhere to post this and ...
