My last work laptop came with Vista installed on it, though I mainly used Ubuntu as my OS on it. Vista seemed to occupy a massive portion of my RAM just to run, and even on a fresh install with 2 gigs of RAM seemed pretty sluggish :(

If I get a choice, next time, I'd probably get it dual-booting with Ubuntu / XP.

I suspect something like a graphic card issue making it slow.

Heavy memory use is because Vista, unlike XP caches lots of stuff to improve performance, but it can drop it quite if it needs. Headline

vista ultmate on one drive ad vista on another. both on laptop and desktop.

laptop dell xps 1730 dual hard drives

desktop home build a64 6400 dual vid cards blah blah same

purely using xp for the extra gaming performance. but for dx 10 games using the vista . both machines are extremely powerfull and i would have to say i really really like vista

I'd definitely use 98 over ME!

I had ME for a very long time while everyone said it was so very bad. For what I use my PC's it was good enough. Had windows 98 before that and an other version I forgot how it is called.
Vista is better than all I had I think, but I'm not into exploring all the stuff.
editor, what on earth is Vista "longhorn" ??

salaam.

I've just noticed that Vista Ultimate allows me to shrink partitions dynamically without having to reformat them. Doesn't do a great job tho, I think you have to fully defrag 1st.

I'm sure it's fine if you don't mess around with it too much, but I've been asked to "fix somebody's computer" too many times, just to find out that all the problems were basically because they had ME installed, that I'm not going to recommend it to anyone.

Longhorn was the codename for Vista before it was released. It seems to have persisted in the identifying header.

Thank you. I can confess that everyone who ever touched my PC's seems to be relieved. Abandonment of ME was more or less pushed onto me by people who look after the healt of PC's (and the child in me could no longer resist a new toy)

salaam.

XP on work machine, Vista on home machine.

Can't say I've noticed any earth shattering differences. Vista is a bit prettier, that's about it.

The search function is a god send, but then that could be achieved with XP, I suppose.

Once your hardware is up to scratch, Vista seems faster.

The poor benighted souls - can we not find out who they are and club together to get them an upgrade?

Isnt that what mobiles or handhelds would come under? I use urban on my blackberry in boring meetings so not sure how that would display under stats?

Although it's fashionable to knock Vista, my experience with it has been overwhelmingly positive.

It's not a power users/tweakers dream though, but for regular consumers it appears to be a very attractive, easy to use, stable OS.

Mobiles/Blackberries would show up as such -- each browser has its own identifier. (Although sometimes they will pretend to be other browsers to get around compatibility issues. IE used to do this...)

Indeed. I don't get this "Well, I bought a laptop with Vista on but I wiped it the second I got home and installed XP " thing - wow, well done, good job

Of course in certain situations, as evidenced by Bees, it's no good.

That would be CE (or Windows Mobile, or Pocket PC) - ME is a botched version of 98 that hates everything.

It depends on "why". If you're saying it because you think its cool then thats a bit sad. But some people have genuine reasons for sticking to Xp. (Software/hardware compatibility, etc...)

Though it has to be said, if you don't mind sticking with Xp for whatever reason, it will go faster if you put on new kit bought for Vista...

So there are many valid reasons for choosing Xp over Vista, as there are always valid reasons for choosing x over y...

Oh, I get this, as I said in the very same post. There will always be valid reasons for choosing XP, but I bet the vast majority of people sneering at Vista would be better off with it.

And actually, in my experience, once you reach the 2GB ram and decent CPU mark, Vista runs faster than XP.

I was going to go for Vista on a new machine until I read here about some of the audio issues. If it weren't for that, I'd go for Vista mainly cos it looks all new and shiny.

I wonder how many of them have even tried it?

I'm only using Vista cos it came installed on my new 'puter. I don't tend to use many old peripherals or legacy s/ware that'd be unpalatable to Vista, so the compatibility problems aren't really an issue for me.

I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it, but neither would I argue particularly strongly against it. If I were advising someone of very limited technical abilities, like my mum, whether to leave Vista on a new PC or ditch it for XP, I'd definitely say stick with it. XP will cease to be supported eventually, MS wants everyone on Vista, and once all the anti-Vista temper tantrums subside, they'll eventually get their way - they always do.

Vista came installed on my laptop so I use that :) It's decided to fuck itself up though so I've got to reinstall, but I don't have a DVD and all the pirate ones I can find are hacked.

The only trouble I've had with sound was on guitar amp modelling software. The latency is HUGE compared to my older lower powered XP system. From the little Googling I've done it's all to do with the DRM stuff Microsoft built in.It's a little annoying but theres no way I'd strip Vista off to remedy the problem.

Ok people I've just installed the Vista SP1.It's supposedly the one being released early next month to everyone. It took an hour to install with various restarts but it was painless.Vista seems so much more responsive than it was but I'll need to use it for a while to see if I have any major probs.

from what I have been hearing you may regret doing SP1 atm...

I am leaving it a short while

I've been on SP1 for about 3 or 4 weeks now. It's fine. Had to update wireless card drivers, but that aside it's been an improvement.

Have all you Vista users managed to install the hotfix for data transfer?
I know some people have had trouble with it on the 32bit version.

I don't fit in to any of the poll categories.

My new laptop which is now my main machine is Vista Home Basic but the old lappy that does all of the downloads and the old desktop which has all of the hard-drive space in it run snide XP Pro.

I'm not keen on Vista. It's slow as fuck and out of the box it looks fucking hideous, I've set it on 'Classic' and I can live with that.
