How many pairs of socks d'you own?

I'm currently experiencing something of a sock crisis.

I used to get a lot of socks at christmas. In recent years, however, this supply has tended to dry up as elderly relatives passed away and I mastered the dark arts of Communicating What You Want For Christmas To Your Mum.

For a couple of years, this wasn't a problem. I usually wear quite thick sports socks, and they've got a bit of wear in them. Worn socks would periodically be relegated to the back of the drawer, or worse, added to the "dead sock" bundle; socks that, despite being of no further use to anybody as anything, I couldn't for administrative reasons bring myself to throw away.

I continued in this destructive spiral of denial for a few more years until last month, when, in a fit of pique, I emptied my sock drawer into the bin. I had NO decent socks except the ones I was wearing and, I thankfully discovered later, two pairs that were in the wash at the time.

I now have three pairs of socks. I urgently need more, but whenever I'm near a sock shop I can't be arsed and when I can be arsed I'm not near a sock shop. I may put a thread up in the Recycle forum, or, failing that, opt for a sockless lifestyle.

I recently engaged in a spate of sock buying as I found £3 for 5 socks far too good quality a bargain to turn down and a lot more easy than going to the laundry. However, I seem mysteriously to be at the same number of socks overall than before this purchase of multiple new socks. Possibly there is a maximum amount of socks that any person can own, and buying new socks will destroy old socks?

The reappearance just made me go & count the day to day pairs - 37 of them. All different weights & I just got 6 new pairs of thick cosy ones at the weekend. £2.99 for 3.

However, I didn't count the socks in the spare clothes/waterproofs bag in the car, nor in the bike pannier & or the outdoor gear bag so I'd guess there would be a lot more.

I have about eight pairs of socks plus about ten individual non-matching socks where the other sock of each pair has mysteriously disappeared. I tried to keep a special carrier bag for odd socks on the theory that every so often the odd socks would meet and pair up again, but it didn't work.

I think that there is a Sock Fairy who is the Tooth Fairy's evil sister. She just takes one sock of each pair to cause trouble. Perhaps I should leave a sixpence in the sock drawer to appease the Sock Fairy. Or perhaps it should be 20 pence taking into account inflation. What does the Tooth Fairy charge these days?

um i just bought six pairs of black sock for 2 squid! (I've already managed to loose a few tho ) Primark rocks, or pri marche as well call it in Chiswick daaaaahling! I generally wear odd socks tho..

I bought 10 pairs of grey socks a while back, hoping to buy some more later, but all the ones now are the wrong colour or have silly writing on

I should have known and bought at least 20 pairs while I could.

It doesn't help that the main Bristol shop is closed while they redevelop the whole area ...

I think I have about 5 pairs of your socks. I * heart * wearing your socks, they are so much better than mine (the ones without holes that is)!

78% of my socks are just black, I had an epiphany once and decided to only buy black socks from that day forwards.

the other 12% are odd socks...

Don't usually wear socks. Or any underwear for that matter. Far more important things to spend my money on



*(I'm assuming two half socks where they have been worn away so badly the don't cover your heel or toes count as one whole sock rather than two individual socks in their own right.)
