How many of your 'five a day' did you eat yesterday, and what were they?

One large pineapple
7 flavourking plums
One large leek
six or seven carrots
1 Taylor's Gold pear
'bout 200g apsaragus.

AND whatever veg is contained in a Sainsbury's chicken casserole ready meal (bleh)

Yay :)

What's happened to the mega feasts we used to read about every day?

According to that link this is just 3 portions of veg.

Do the grapes in wine count? :hmm:
Yes, yes they do.

Don't bother checking that with anyone else, they'll only perpetuate untruths.

In fact, it's well known that the distillation process actually increases the health giving properties of the grapes by at least 500%.

Probably best if you don't check that with anyone either.

How does the veg in a pasta sauce count then ?

that's all i had.....

don't think i have many days when i get through 5 distinct portions ??? and i hardly ever eat fruit !

Reckon I make 5 just with the salad for lunch, but also 2 fruit cereal bars for breakfast and again after I took the dog out, and a glass of Tropicana Essentials. And just when it all sounds sooo healthy, none with dinner last night cos it was from the chip shop :D

I'd long suspected this but have, up until now, never been able to find conclusive proof of this fact.

Once again, thank you Suburban:D:D

hmmm think i ate far more than i normally do..

Dried fruit in museli
Blueberries
Bannana
Onion & Tomatoes (in soup)
Bannana, kiwi fruit, apple (in smoothie)
Onion & tomatoes (in pasta sauce)
green beans
courgette
Orange

I can understand why you can only count juice as one, there's no solids in it so it's lacking something, but why not smoothies? Everything that's in whole fruit is in my smoothies. I don't peel anything, in fact I manage to consume a lot more of it than if I was eating it straight.

zzzzzzz

Stop counting, it's boring. Eating isn't supposed to be difficult, or a worry. Just eat and stop worrying.

Fantastic

I'm sure that hops won't count though - William are you reading this? :p

If I did that I'd be 22 stone and have the shits permanently. There's other food that I eat but I don't actually like anything that isn't chocolate or cake.

Because if you drank 5 smoothies a day and no other fruit and veg, then you'd be fucked really wouldn't you.

Fuck all but some tomato juice.

If I don't have a salad bar for lunch, I probably only eat about 2 or 3 portions a day max. Tin of lentils, onion, broccolli or courgette or something with some wholegrain rice or cous cous or pasta or something in the evening. I don't think I'm going to die from malnutrition.

If nice fruits like cherrys and berrys weren't so pricey I'd undoubtedly eat more.

I'm not sure I remember what I ate yesterday

I know I had cauliflower, onion and spinach and at least one apple. I probably had cucumber, onion, tomato and pickled things for lunch. Can't remember if I had breakfast.

Today's main meal includes onions, garlic, peppers, tomatoes, peas, beans (pinto) and beans (green) and I had the same lunch as yesterday (I think). And an apple.

I make that 4/5 for yesterday and maybe 6/7 for today.

Having smoked like a thing possessed for years and probably drunk at a risky level too, I'm not really convinced that upping my vegetable intake is going to offset the damage done. But I do like vegetables and am pleased that everyone else is obliged to like them too; my domestic drive to force greens down the babies' throats had a fairly dismal success rate until this 5-a-day malarkey started.

Is that your dinner? Don't you bother defrosting stuff first?

I'm not a vegetarian. :p

I didn't defrost it as I was looking at what is classed as a portion. After taking the photo it all went back in the freezer.

That pile of veg would last me nearly a week. eek.

Why?

If your making your own smoothies then they contain the fibre from all the fruits you put in. It also contains all the vitamins and minerals as well. So you get the best of both worlds (whatever the 5 a day is trying to acheive).

You think that drinking 5 smoothies a day and no other fruit or veg would be a healthy way to live? ok...

This requires some thought:

Yesterday:
- half Mango
- mixed salad
- 2 oranges
- gherkins (do they count?)
- leek
- cauliflower
- 3 apples

Today:
- 1 orange
- 2 field mushrooms
- half a pepper
- a pear
- an apple
- various vege in a chinese take away
- probably some fruit later

I think the stir-fry I made for tea just about covers my five portions for today. It had onion, pepper, green beans, mini-sweetcorn and peas in it, and it was very nice indeed.

From that link it's not just the number of pieces of fruit or veg you have but the amount.

8 florets of cauliflower count as 1 portion
4 heaped tablespoons of peas or carrots or sweetcorn count as 1 portion.

So unless your stirfry filled a bucket it didn't contain 5 portions of veg.:)

Perhaps, although when I looked into this once, ages ago, I was surprised at how little you had to eat to count as a portion. I eat enormous dinners, so I tend to assume that even if they contain the only fruit and veg I eat all day they're probably sufficient. :D
