since i have lived in ireland i have found supporters of clubs who are every bit as passionate as i was when i went regularly, but who have never attended a game, including my son in law who goes into the depths of depression whenever liverpool lose,

I don't deny that these sadsacks exist, but they should be about as respected as the kind of blue-rinsed suburbanites who wept buckets over Princess Di's death or tweens who rang up the Take That hotline in floods of tears after Robbie quit the band.

It's just a bit weird to be that passionate about a side you only ever watch on the telly. Get off your arse, turn off the sky telebox and go and engage with real fans down the ground.

I get to the occasional away game and none of the home games unless I find myself in Ipswich.

I still consider myself a true fan as I don't hide my allegiance when we lose (which is more often than I'd like, Mr. Keane).

I also consider myself to have a life, a family, some hobbies and healthy love of all things not football.

Argue the toss, if you like, but I'll be busy.

You need to attend regularly for more than one period in your life to be a true fan. Unless that one period is your whole life, of course.

i'm letting you off, i reckon you're a true fan despite not getting to many games.

Why thank you. :)

I still try my best to go to as many as I can - 3 last season - but it's hard enough to actually get tickets, even if I can get the time to get up.

I really miss going to football regularly, though. :(

I have been a Villa fan for nealry 30 years, since the age of 5 or 6. During my school years and especially when I was in my late teens I used to go to most home games and the odd away game. I now live in Surrey and have 2 kids which restricts my time and finances available to go to games. I unfortunately only managed one home and one away game last season.

I don't accept that I am not a true fan becuase of my inability to go to as many matches as I used to. Claret and blue runs through my veins and always will and hopefully I will pass on the virus to my kids!

Why am I a glory hunter you daft brush? Looking forward to your reasoning.

I don't think the number of games visited is that good an indication of 'true fan' status fwiw. It's more the willingness and effort taken to go in most ways. It's more the type who can't be bothered to go to their own team's ground who get my wick, even if it's distinctly achievable. Some seem to prefer to get their feed solely through the filter of Sky TV, excitably parroting what was just said on SS2 and repeating the pundits' opinions as if biblical truths.

true fans: me, refused as fuck, tommers, deareg, mattie, stupid dogbot, terrynutkin, tarrannau, onket,

not true fans: kained&able, biddlybee, deareg's son in law, revol68, trippylondoner

...agree, and...

being a 'true' fan is going into work the day after your team has been mullered by your local rivals 7-0, at home, and taking all the shit, all the jokes, all the jpg's posted onto your wallpaper, all the post-it notes, everything...and wearing your home shirt underneath the blue-collar and still thinking your going to win the league.

Discuss.

Don't give a fuck really. So what,. you're a true fan? Good for you. I still enjoy my way of doing things, and when i have more money in my life i'll start going. Got other things to sort out, though.

according to the purists on this site, you are not allowed tp passit onto your kids, they won't be classed as proper supporter

you jumped on the arsenal bandwagon, that makes you are glory hunter.

none of the second part of your post applies to him, or to most of the supporters who i have come to know over here, so i don't know what i am supposed to say to it apart from stop generalising about people who you have never met and know fuckall about

You don't think I'm going to give them a choice do you?! I have had to live with the misery for 30 years. I need people to share it with! My 4 year old daughter spends the whole of Saturday/Sunday afternoon singing the Villa songs I have taught her and asking for more. I have run out of the clean ones! She had a nursery teacher called Miss Carew that she used to sing to as well!
