How many dismissals at your work place?

At my old school I taught at in Wuhan, it wasn't so much FTs getting fired (none) as people legging it. While I was there,-

- the kenyan girl who was there in the first term did a runner about halfway through the term

- an american girl turned up, looked at wuhan and the school, stayed for a week then returned to america (cos she was missing her girlfriend :D)

- another american/south african girl legged it halfway through the year

- an american guy turned up, freaked out, taught for a day, told them teaching wasn't for him and that he was leaving, they begged him to stay and he ended up staying for ages and is still TEFLing :D

I used to work in a place with a high turnover, because they treated their staff like crap, it was well paid but you had to be a masochist to work there, it bordered on outright bullying by the management.

Here, about one or two every few months, stalin-esqe, they're just not here in the morning.

Here's a great place to work, we win fuck loads of awards for it... massage chairs, pool table, dart boards, 360, Wii, free booze all week, pizza if you work late, excellent career progression and training, etc. I guess that's why we're so strict. No bullying, but like I said, if you're shit at your job, you're out.

What kind of workload do you have though?, Do you do unpaid overtime etc?

I've been in my job 7 years...plenty of people have come and gone, but nobody has ever been sacked. My colleague was given his notice on Wednesday but he was on a temporary contract anyway. He might have been kept on if he'd been any good, however.

social housing facilities management.

we lose loads of people because we pay peanuts compared to what good people get in the private sector but more than shit people can earn in non-HA public sector jobs. so regular pruning is necessary of the useless, plus we regularly lose surveyors and DLOs to better paid jobs where they don't get tenants abusing them all the time.

We lose about 1 a month - and there's not very many of us (10-15). But one of the guys changed his mind, and stayed, and one left today through a point of principle.

Somebody should be got rid of as they are a fucking liability, and have already had their probation extended. We shall have to wait and see.

Your point being? I joined three years ago, fresh from dropping out of uni, as a tea boy. 6 months in I was manager of my dept, 1yr in I was working with MD, 3 years in I'm pretty much a director. I love the place, I can't imagine many other companies where I could get recognised and developed to the extent that I have there - I consider myself lucky.

My point is that your view of its inherent healthiness and absence of conflict may or may nor be correct, but at the same time it may or may not be influenced by your position and success.

Maybe... I'd only disagree with one of the dimissals though. In fairness, I'd give people more of chance but that's not my call.
