How loud is *96db* (max volume stipulated in venue hire agreement)

I have never gone to a club or gig without wearing earplugs - even then I've lost some sensitivity over the years.
It shocks me that people who love music can care so little about their hearing - but then a lot of the punters were also doing other stuff that did them permanent harm.

I've never worn earplugs at a club or gig and still have sensitive hearing. Imo if your hearing is gonna go it'll go anyway.
A mate lost his hearing for 3 days after a Motorhead gig many years ago and his hearing still fine.

I was the system tech on a rig for Chase & Status a couple of months back, they (unsurpisingly) asked for "as much bass as possible".

"Challenge accepted" says I, looking at a lovely pile of D&B Audioteknik.

20 minutes into the set a panicked looking tour manager runs over to me and says "OK, you'd better turn the bass down a bit".

I look over at the main stack of subs to see large lumps of plaster on top of it.
