How far should one drive in a day?

Longest journey I’ve done is 350 m from Dorset to Newcastle. It nearly broke me.
I now realise I just can’t do that length of drive in one day, it sends my brain screwy and I get tired really quickly so max 4 hours for me.

Next time we go to Newcastle, I’ll stop over somewhere nice on the way.
That’s how I feel today. Felt like I needed a few hours to decompress when I got in. Had to drag myself out of bed, done very little work, feel tired now. Having to drive part of the last hour on unfamiliar hilly roads in the blackdowns with other drivers not dipping their headlights didn’t help.

Was a passenger on a Penn State to New Orleans drive, two drivers, two passengers, fairly compact car with luggage for two weeks pissing about. I think it was about 1400 miles, 19hrs driving. I remember working out the average speed was something like 77mph, when many of the states on the way still had a 55 limit.

I hate long drives. Once took an internal flight in the US to avoid a 5h drive. The couple at the BnB we were staying in were just about to start a 17h drive home.

Mrs Spy is the same, which is a shame because I love road trips and driving. On several occasions, she's taken a train or plane and I've driven and met her at the destination. The last time was London to Scotland (via York for me), and I got a childish sense of achievement, pulling-up at our meeting spot in Edinburgh, about 30 seconds after she got there.

I bloody love long drives😎 Probably the longest I've done in one stretch was about 8hrs which was fine, could have driven longer.

Planning them is almost as much fun as driving them. I go into full geek mode and spend weeks planning every detail of the trip. Every stop, restaurant, hotel. Departure times, ETAs, fuel stops, things to see along the way; even what music I'll be playing for certain scenery.

Sad, eh? :D

There is great joy in executing a well considered plan...

I enjoy it as well - the right road, the right petrol station, the right pub, the right open space for a picnic, the perfect diversion around a problem, the right hotel.

The satisfaction of getting to a problem, and having a pre-prepared diversion written out with all the contingencies laid out...

Recently did the run from daughters in Swindon to Moray Firth coast. Two breaks. These days joints get a bit stiff though so i take an profen or two. Longest journey i ever did was a 1970s trip from west Yorkshire to cornwall 370 miles. got into a blazing row with my dad (regarding politics!) within an hour of arriving. we were going to stay with dad for a fortnights holiday, but the escalating bitterness fucked it, so it was bags back in car and return journey home. 750 miles! i was ready for a cuppa when we finally landed 🙁

I have done two National Road Rally (Motorcycles)

They involve 500 miles overnight and numerous check points which you have to navigate an optimum number of to achieve maximum points.

You get a couple of weeks with the map of checkpoints to plan your route to ideally achieve maximum points. I got max points both times I did it!!

What is the National Road Rally?

The National Road Rally is a navigational scatter rally organised in conjunction with the ACU and the BMF. The event is not a race and each rider follows their own route, visiting different controls around the country, the only time stipulation is that riders complete their route in the allotted time. The number of controls each rider visits will depend on the award that they are competing for and the location of the controls will be shown on the “Matrix” which is normally issued to entrants two weeks before the event.

Anybody with a full motorcycle licence living in the United Kingdom can enter the National Road Rally, you don’t need a competition licence or any previous competition experience to compete. You can enter online on the National Road Rally website by following the Entries link on the main menu. You can also download a copy of the Supplementary Regulations from this website, these are the “rules” of the National Road Rally and all competitors should make sure they’ve read them before entering the rally. After you’ve entered the National Road Rally, you will receive a confirmation email which will contain your Rider Number and an Entry Code, you will need both of these to log into the myNRR section of the website where you will be able to download the Matrix and Control Details 10 days prior to the event.

If you ever need an excuse to do 500 miles overnight, in warmish summertime, this is it!!

It isn't supposed to be a race, but you know, kids will be kids :)

:)

This is the sort of matrix of checkpoints

You have to plan a route of exactly 500 miles, including special checkpoints where you have to take a 20 minute rest or something .. anyhow a bit of a challenge for the grey matter before you get near to swinging a leg over your machine.

:)
