spacemonkey, sorry for your loss. my cat is 19 and I know it won't be lonng for me either. Im dreading it.
To the OP : he starts with purring. Then he miaows at a gradually increasing volume. Then he progresses to patting me with his paw, any bit of me that he can reach. If that doesn't work, then he scratches me. If
that doesn't work, he bites me. Hard. Anywhere he can reach but given the choice (and as somebody else has already mentioned) he prefers the soft bits that hurt the most - inner arm, face, eyelids are good as is the mouth. Oh - and toes. Now that does hurt!
The entire process starts at around 6 am, perhaps a little later. It doesn't take very long (around 30 minutes average probably) and is vastly preferred if i've been drinking the night before. The more I had to drink ,the earlier it starts and the more vicious the attacks are.
Give him his due though, if I do manage to get all of me under the duvet (easier in the winter when it's cold & dark) he will eventually shut up and go away, but mostly I feel honour bound to get up. This is because
a) the dog has most likely eaten the biscuits I have carefully left out the night before to prevent the early morning assault:
b ) he has an overactive thyroid gland and is probably genuinely hungry, enhanced by the fact that when he gets too hungry he's sick, and
c) Im far too soft. This would be the overriding factor.
