It takes huge amounts of money to get elected to Congress and even more to be President. People who want to be elected promise favours to business and other special interest groups, in return for cash and political influence.
Whoever is willing to promise the most to the interest groups with the most money and clout, gets elected.

And JC2 - it's possible to learn about other countries political systems by studying the theory and practice. While you can never replicate the exact experience of being there, it is possible to look at things like what's supposed to happen and what actually happens, and compare the theory to the practice!
Really? I am very familiar with how the UK political system (as distinct from government, which is merely a part of the entire system) works. I think you're just trying to cover for your lack of knowledge by claiming that "most people" are the same as you. What nonsense.
