How does one buy a car?

One thing to look for is scratches and or keying. If you're not really bothered about looks then it can get you a nicer car than an unmarked one (got a rather nice 1998 Perguot 306 for £1250 just a few days ago thanks to some cunt keying it, but the engine is fine so who cares?). PS. If i didn't get a good deal i don't want to know, ignorance is bliss :)

One thing to look for is power steering, especially if you start getting towards the 5 door end of the market. I drove a VW golf that had no power steering and it was uncomfortable for me, not to mention it put my ex's back out from the sheer work.

A peugot 306 , 1998 for £1,250. Don't worry, that's a great deal!! lucky sod. Who cares if it's keyed. I wouldnt worry about that, it's what's under the bonnet and the wheel arches that counts. ;)

very good. i'd love to get hold of a peug for that money.

Thank you soooo muich, especially PTG - I can't tell you how much I appreciate this help and advice!

Buying a car isn't urgent riiight now in that I have not yet passed my test but it is certainly something I want to do by Christmas. I have another test in a few weeks.

In terms of how often I use will use it, definitely every weekend and I would imagine during the week as well. Parking is not an isse round where I live. Mostly I will just be carrying myself but there will be passengers and luggae from time to time.

Thank you again to everyone for the help here.

Winter states that she doesn't know much about cars and has not idea about the market, and you think she should stroll into a dealership and start strong arming snakeoil salesmen for a second hand motor?? don't be ridiculous.
You don't have to strongarm anyone.

Me and my good lady are about as naive as it is possible to be when it comes to cars (I don't even drive). But, armed with a valuation from Parkers, we sat back and laughed at his first trade in offer. Suddenly the "fixed" price became flexible and the trade in price improved. It helps-big time-to have your own finance in place.

Don't be pressured into taking short term decisions.
