How do you set up an FTP site (on a Mac)

The file sizes could easily get up to 2-300meg, certainly in the 10-100megs on a daily, regular basis.
That's going to put quite a strain on your broadband upstream...

Why's Java "prohibitive cost wise"...? .... There might be an open-source system, but the OP will still have to install and customise it himself...

I was assuming OP didn't have much of a budget for this, thus with an open source PHP solution OP has some chance of figuring out how to configure and install it himself. otherwise yes you're right Java would be the ideal solution. and if he finds a java solution which he can install himself then all the better :)

As long as its SDL it should be fine... TBH, it might be better if the OP does involve the IT dept as they'd be able to advise him much better than random people of the internet...

Yep, there may be an open-source java system as well...

just ask your IT guys to set up a ftp site on their bits.

you can connect to their severs fine so its not really an issue if they set up a PC based FTP server.

let me put it another way...

you are having problems setting up an ftp server. how are you going to secure it, protect it and monitor it against attacks. if it got "pwned" by some 7 year old in china would you be able to restore all teh files they deleted?

just let your IT dept set it up and tat all becomes tehir responsibility. then just treat the ftp server as shared network storeage

Yeah. Done properly, there's no reason why you'd want this on a machine in a corner or in the IT room. If your company has anything approaching an IT security policy, then you want all contact with the outside world to go through them.

OR, use one of the many online file transfer services. Sure it won't have your brand on it, but it's free.

I doubt you can do this alone.

a) If you are on a LAN, I doubt your machine can be accessed publicly so you'll need to talk to IT about making this machine publicly accessible in the first place. This in itself is a can of worms as ftp servers are normally put in a dmz for loads of reasons. Even if they don't ask, you'll need to know the public IP address they have assigned for this machine so you can give it to your clients.

b) As soon as you have this conversation they're going to ask why you're setting up an ftp server in the first place.

Talk to your IT people sooner rather than later. It's just an inevitability from what I can see.

Heh! heh! heh! Looks like I will get some support from IT after all.

Seems I've got a dual network carded server, ME (the macs) are on one side and the rest of the company is on the other side. Soooo, from an IT point of view, they seem to be pretty cool. Hoorah!

Looks Like I can get my own broad band link on, on the understanding that I sort out any virus issues, (no, biggy, been doing that for the lat 15 years or so).

Then, as luck would have it, I got SPAM, but useful SPAM, for a couple of hundred quid I can get a bit of software that seems to produce what I want, a nice, easy, to use, SHINY, <<<<<<mmmmmmm, shiny>>>>> welcome to the studio page.
