It's not about winning, it's about taking part.
No-one here will mercilessly tease you for your mushroom-preparation idiosyncrasies.

Herbsman, me old mucker... you look like the kind of chap who'd peel a mushroom :)
Fuck off :D

I just wash and chop

Or cook them whole in the oven with olive oil, salt, pepper and hers

I remove any obvious dirt with a non moist implement

i was going to vote for the first option as instructed but as this does not fully represent my point of view on the subject i have voted fizz bang walnuts.

i do like walnuts so this is ok

Thank god I'm not the only one who just chucks them in the pan. I might knock off any hugely intimidating pieces of dirt, but they ain't killed me yet with their poo (lol firkles) and I can't see it happening in the future.

If the stalks are looking really ropey on slightly older mushrooms I might snap them off, but otherwise it's all good :)

I keep checking this to see if anyone else peels and destalks them.. nope.

The strongest trees are the ones that stand alone.

I peel if they are going slimy but generally no.

I don't wash them either, I don't really see the point. If they are going to be cooked anyway...

I might dust off some dirt if it's too big or it tastes a bit gritty.

wtf is wrong with eating the stalks?

it's like these weirdos who throw away the broccoli and cauliflower stalks. except weirder.

this thread has made me realise how much i love and miss mushrooms. Monkeygrinder won't eat them, so i don't bother nowadays.

I might make myself a yummy mushroom omlette tomorrow.

and a quick wipe - normally with my fingers - is utterly sufficient.:)

they grew them in chicken shit last time I had the misfortune to have to pick them (did it for one week - hellish it was)

((((((mushroom pickers))))))

It's a bit late to be dusting dirt off at that point. :)

Thank you :)

(I lasted a two weeks, £3.50 an hour too!)

Growing mushrooms at home requires peroxide I believe. Dunno about commercial ones.

I rinse and chop, only destalking if the mushrooms get a few days old.

fucking horrible... still, that kinda explains why you have such a weird relationship with mushrooms, musta proper fucked you up init...

I remember walking into the co-op not long after my mushroom picking job and seeing a box of mushrooms spilling out onto the floor. made me feel sick that did...

I wipe them with a bit of damp kitchen roll to get rid of the dirt/shit/chemical growing medium. I also often chop off the end of the stalks if they look manky, but I don't really have a rational reason for doing this.

i don't even wash them, let alone peel and de-stalk. i pick off obvious chunks of dirt, but i find they're pretty clean when you buy them.

Apparently that whole thing about mushrooms absorbing water is scientifically rubbish, an untruth that's been doing the cheffy rounds for years.

So after years of carefully wiping off mud and growing matter off with my thumb, avoiding using too much water I now just rinse mushrooms in a colander. And guess what - they cook and taste exactly the same.
