How do you people live with Torrents?

Like Sub advises - check your isp does decent groups, ie alt.binaries.movies.divx
read the isp newsgroups to see what others say about the service.

I use blueyonder who were great for a while but then went totally shit so I signed up with astraweb - unlimited download about £6pm, Blueyonder isn't so bad now if it's a recent post then they pretty much have all the parts, if not I'll grab what's needed from astraweb.

Get a copy of grabbit and browse newzbin.com and download to your hearts content! also with a newzbin account which is really cheap, downloaders will often leave comments about the file quality, eg they will rate the movie for sound and video quality, so you don't end up downloading any shit stuff.

Over the weekend I d/l'd Flight 93, Flightplan and Super size me, each took about 1/2 hr. And the quality was all great.

If it's quicker on usenet then get it from usenet! Some things are insanely quick from torrent, some things not.

I regularly get 300k/s with some torrent trackers.
Uh-huh, indeed. I use dcc within irc and get mad sppeds. There's also amule (linux) emule (doze) it's another p2p app with which you can check your connection status quickly. No commands, optoions jus visit a url.

Don't you have to pay for usenet though?

With 10 seeds I would get a much faster rate than that. I'm downloading something with 5 seeds for 40kps.

I pay £8 a month for access to a server with decent speeds, completion and retention. I also pay something like £10 a year for a decent NZB site, although there are free ones about. Depending on your ISP you might have access to a decent news server for free, but that is rare.

I'm on 10 meg cable and consistently get 1200 kb/s download. I don't mind paying the extra due to the of films and music I leach and torrents taking 2 days to complete does my head in.

If you use usenet you are also less likely to get a nasty letter from the copyright police, as you are not actually sharing anything.

There is a good guide on usenet/newsgroups here:

http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

It was around before the www as we know it and has evolved into a useful tool to share files.

You need a few things (and these may cost money)

1. A news server where you can download your files from. I use http://www.newshosting.com/ which gives me unlimited downloads for $15 a month

2. A news reader to connect to the server, download and unencode the binary files. I use http://www.newsleecher.com/ which costs £ for a licence, there are free ones like Grabbit but I found that to be a massive resource hog.

3. Not entirely necessary to get access to the content, but NZB files are really handy, they act a bit like torrent files, grabbing all the bits that you need in one fell swoop. I use http://www.newzbin.com I have forgotten how much this costs as I bought a couple of years subs in thier half price xmas sale last year, but it's not expensive for a premium account.

Then you can start downloading files, you will also need things like Quickpar to repair files and winrar to extract them, but there are some automated programs like rarslave that do all of this for you and take out a lot of the hassle.
