You notice when someone comes into or goes out of the pub; there is a drop in temperature. The litter on the pavement sticks in the wet bits. It gets just that bit harder to get up in the morning. The wind gets gusty. The bright sun doesn't have the heat it once did and doesn't last too long. There are conkers on the pavement. People start to look a bit gloomy. We all walk that bit faster on the street. When you stop to chat you don't spend so long. Lots of people head off abroad for a late holiday.
Having said that there is something moody and reassuring about Autumn. It is a season that may come late, but it always comes eventually. The other seasons are more elusive. Winter sometimes is mild and not in character. Spring may appear really early but if it does it fades away and all the optimistic early plants die in a sudden cold snap. Summer, who knows what it will do any year? This year it never turned up. Perhaps it had a more interesting date somewhere else. Oh fickle Summer!
Autumn may not be so welcome but is more predictable and that is its subtle comfort. It is a reliable companion who is not too demanding usually, and is worthy of a bit of effort. Hail Autumn, well met old friend.
