They're a very ancient Indian religion, there's considerable debate around whether they influenced Buddhism and Hinduism and vice versa.

I think rejecting onion and garlic and chili is fairly widespread across various subcontinent faiths. They tend to use asofoetida (sp?) instead

Yes, some Hindus wont eat onion and garlic, esp. from areas like Gujerat where Jainism has een historically influential.
