How do I know when i need a new guitar?q

That could mean a) he's so knowledgable and passionate that he will understand and appreciate anyone's enthusiasm for music or b) he will have little idea of what it's like to learn because it's so long since he did

The amount of difference a proper setup makes to ANY guitar is incredible, especially when the guitar hasn't had one since it was bought. That first setup puts it where it should be, and any subsequent ones are usually just tune-ups. The problem with having it done to a cheapy is the cost of repair and maintenance can approach the cost of the instrument!

Out of the shop, if a cheapie with a bad setup gets 2 out of 10 for niceness to play, and a handbuilt gets 8, setting them both up properly brings them surprisingly closer together EG 7 and 10.

I make guitars and work in a repair shop too, and we always take pleasure in the transformation you get with a guitar that's not been checked over before. The smiles on peoples faces :D

Yes, I set up my old Yam and the difference was incredible. I bought the Lag at Xmas and the difference is in the sounds. The Yam is quite muddy and bass-y while my new instrument has a much wider range of tones

It is nice to have a choice. i kind of like the volume and bassiness of a some cheap guitars (i have a yamaha, they are very good for the price definitely) more than the more refined sounds of more expensive ones, but obviously it's a bit more limited and you have to fight the guitar more so it depends what you want to do.

I know what you mean. I felt almost guilty and unfaithful for the first few days of my new guitar. I had grown used to the deep bassiness of the Yam and the Lag's bright tones seemed somehow thinner. I'm past that stage now tho, and know I have a quality piece of kit with a much wider range that's easier to play :)
