How diverse is your taste in music?

Choci's back catalogue can be reasonably good acidy trance.. if you don't care that much about 'music'.

Does that make any sense?

I think my taste is pretty diverse. I'll listen to folk, jazz, commercial pop, underground dance, rock, indie... There are few genres I don't like on principle, although there is a lot of music that leaves me cold. I'd rather have the cream of every genre than just love everything from maybe a couple of genres - can't understand people like that.

Diversity you say?

Bach's St Matthew's Passion in Liverpool Cathedral last Saturday.
Throbbing Gristle in May.

How's that then?

Quite a lot.

Standard rock and roll, indie, heavy metal, thrash metal, black metal, trance/hard trance, hardstyle, gabber, hardcore, happy hardcore, some pop and classical, certain rap, trip hop, Irish trad/folk.

I had a house mate who sang with the Medieval Babes for a few months if that counts? Fucking bonus. :)

I used to hang out with the brother of one of them when I was in my late teens.

I think every single genre has at least one good example to offer, I like good music, not bothered what category it fits in.

Yeah well I shagged them all ten times while loads of really famous people watched and applauded.

This kind of question, whilst valid, can trouble me in some ways, in that many people will rate the music according to the genre it inhabits and its immediate contempories. Thus I think the safest answer I can give is that I will always be wary to dismiss any "kind" music wholsesale, as they can all contain both hidden gems and hidden crap.

For a brief overview of my "taste" see my posts on the "On the CD player...." thread. There's very little smooth sequencing in styles between consecutive records, bit like an old John Peel show. I'd be a shite club DJ.

You're sacked for playing Jeff Buckley all afternoon.

:p
It was a mistake, er.. the volume was turned down.. or something. But I made up for it by playing Mindless Self Indulgence, Ultraviolence, Sheep on Drugs and this cool band I'd never heard of before called Sneaky Bat Machine all last night (but I wasn't at home so it doesn't show up on my last.fm).

Wow, you're so cool!

Can I have your autograph?
Yeah alright. Never let it be said I've turned my back on the little people now I've hit the big league.

I do have trouble 'getting' albums that are silent to make a statement. It's not really music if you can't hear anything surely

Who did the silent album again? Edit: It was one song aparently (i thought it was a whole album) by John Cage
Interestingly, while i was looking for the answer i found this
http://www.chartattack.com/damn/2002/07/0404.cfm

Bloody ell John Cage may own the rights to silence  :D
He sued Mike Batt of The Wombles fame for breach of copyright over 4'33" didn't he?]

Hear it here: http://interglacial.com/~sburke/pub/midi/john_cage_4m33s.mid

I prefer the radio edit

i like:

from my mid-teens: heavy metal & grunge (Guns n Roses, Faith no more, Metallica, Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, Pearl Jam)

later teens: techno & drum & bass (Dave Clarke, Laurent Garnier, tons of other DJs)

latter years: Irish trad music, Justin Timberlake, Arcade Fire, Flaming Lips, The Frames, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Prince, U2

it's quite mixed...I'm not great for keeping up with new music, I listen to all my old stuff alot...

pretty damn diverse in the balance of things. i dont have many friends with as diverse taste as me and the ones that do probably like a bit of cack somewhere :)

Having said what I said above, I will note that I go through periods of completism with certain artists. It's been Dylan (that took a while), Daft Punk and the Super Furry Animals, the latter of whom I had everything they'd ever released including the early limited pressing 7 inches. Right now I seem to be particularly attracted to work by Prince, Brian Eno and Squarepusher. What a collaboration they'd be. :)

Short answer: http://www.last.fm/user/iamtef/

But last.fm isn't that accurate as I lost about two months of listening habits recently.

If I like the sound of an artist, I tend to get as much as I possibly can and then listen to it madly for a few weeks/months. This is why I have a huge spike on the playlist for things like Devo (Which I haven't listened to for a few months)

Bearing that in mind, this week I have been mostly obsessing over Komeda (swedish pop), and previous obsessions have been Stereolab, Devo, Polysics, Ratatat, and Tokyo Jihen.

Longer answer:
Other people think I have a diverse taste in music, but then again I'm yet to meet someone who thinks that their music collection isn't diverse to some extent.

To a certian extent, my music taste isn't that diverse because it seems to be a collection of slightly related fringe artists. If I like a band, I find out their influences, other bands from around the same era, same producer, same label, same members, and other bands that cite them.

It's probably easier to talk about what I don't listen to in terms of genres though. I haven't got into metal at all, I don't mind rock but It doesn't make me want to rock out, I've sung bits and pieces of classical music but haven't found a composer to obsess over yet. Jazz, Funk and soul are excellent, but I never get around to listening to them.

And EBM is like elevator music for goths.

I'll give almost anything a shot if it's good. About the only exceptions are happy hardcore and power ballads.

My collection's a fairly even balance of guitarry stuff and electronic, with a smattering of classical.

I used to only listen to riot grrl and shun everything else:o
Today I have listened to...Jurassic 5, a Phil Spector compilation, Natasha Atlas, 2 Lone Swordsmen, Sonic Youth, The Good Tanyas and Rave 92 :D Twas a good day:cool:
