How bad were Queen?

How Bad are Queen?

Well, seeing as I have just got back from doing FOH sound at the fanclubs annual convention, and as such have had three days of nothing but them*, I should hate them.

But I don't, they rocked, covered a huge range of musical styles, did it with tongue firmly in cheek and deserve their place in "rock history".

Oh, and anyone who reckons they can think of a greater rock frontman than Freddie, or a greater single performance than Live Aid, is wrong. :)

* As in Queen dance lessons in the morning, lookalike contests, interviews, old videos and concerts shown, three tribute bands plus three four hour discos where nothing else but Queen is played

they were my favourite band for about 6 years, i fucking adored them. i grew out of them in the early 80s* and i've barely listened to them in 20 years, but i have a soft spot. they're not my cup of tea, but they brought me a huge amount of pleasure for a long period of my life so i certainly can't hate them.

* i'm not implying they're for people who HAVEN'T grown out of them or something, before people whinge. i'm talking about me :)

Queen were ace.....

1)They were a gateway band, most people I knew went from their "Queen" phase into their stoner Led Zep, Pink Floyd/metal/punk/ska whatever phase.

2)Any band that can call itself Queen, be fronted by a muscular man in Spandex with a tash that size, and still have a devoted fan base of mulleted clueless teenage boys can't be all bad.

3)Whatever you think of the music, Freddy Mercury himself was class. My already high opinion of him as a person only increased after witnessing the way he spent the last months of his life (ie: no press, no drama and no self pity).

I wouldn't try and defend them musically but I still get nostalgic when I hear certain tracks 'cos it reminds me of the innocence of being a nipper.

i pretty much agree with all that..

and i KNOW Queen were politically a bit suss, and that Freddie should probably have done the right thing re: his sexuality etc, and that they shouldn't have played Sun City yadda yadda. they weren't Crass. or even the Clash.

OMG!!! I don't think that any money would cover the trauma that this event would cause me.

To each their own.
That's incredibly scary!

The H8rs don't know what they're missing however - a well developed sense of irony, self-deprecation and fun.

<snip>offensive shite removed<snip>

On a scale of Sting - Springsteen, Sting being really very bad indeed, Springsteen being so mindblowingly shite you wish you would die before the song finished.

You like Neil Young but hate Springsteen?

completely unnacceptable comment!

edit it please - quickly or I'll do it for you.

ooops yeah that was sick, you can delete in in yr quote too if you like :o

my totally obscure point was that i'm coming to think of one's like or dislike of something like a pop group, as inferring almost nothing about one's character, it's almost completely random

On account of Neil Young is good, but Springsteen did Born in the USA.
A powerful anti Vietnam song, cruelly misrepresented.

I don't think you've the slightest clue about his earlier work, have you?

In fact, I don't think you know much about music, full stop.

If that was the future of rock n roll, it should have been put down there and then.
Are you on a mission to parade your ignorance around or something?

Or is this like Junior High School trolling?

Funny thing is, there's lots of bands I don't like but I don't feel the need to start polls about them and start slagging off other people's choices in music.

I find it easier just to ignore the bands I don't like. That way, they're never in a position to 'bore' me.

Maybe you should try the same?

eh? have you read the Music forum. it's FULL of threads slagging off other people's choices in music.

and you do it all the bloody time. which is fine - it's a laugh, it's what we do in the Music Forum - but don't get all defensive when somebody you like gets dissed. shall i search out the scores of times you've slagged off Chumbawamba and other bands i like? :D

Och, lighten up mate. There was a thread bigging up Queen. I thought some balance was required. My views on Queen and Springsteen are well known amongst the regulars in here. It's a bit of a laugh.

And (here's the clincher) it's a music forum. Everything is opinion.

I don't mind Queen or Bruce Springsteen.

I mean I don't actually listen to either of them, but if I heard them I wouldn't get eggy about it.

I agree with the editor actually, if you don't like someone just try and forget all about them.

Unless it's Jamie Cullum and you have no frigging choice because he's on the telly every five minutes.

No idea what you're on about. Please explain.
You seem to be quite worked up about some fairly innocuous comments in a forum full of taste slagging. I humorously wanted to inquire after your tolerance levels.
