Hotels in Madrid

dessiato

4 years and I still cry sometimes
I have to go to Madrid for a couple of days and need a cheap and cheerful hotel with easy access to both the airport and the center if possible.

Do any of you have any recommendations?

My girlfriend stayed in an absolute belter of a hotel - right near the centre. Cheap too.

She'll be back in an hour or so - then I'll let you know the name.

I visit Madrid quite a bit and always stay here:

About 50 mins metro journey from the airport. On a small side street just off Sol, so very central.

Basic, but clean and a fantastic location.

Run by the lovely Juan Carlos who will tell you all the best places to eat.

There is a small-ish chain called Room Mate. I always stay at 'Room Mate Laura' whilst in Madrid, probably one of my favorite all round hotels. Friendly staff, nice rooms (some split onto 2 floors), and nice breakfast (included).

Its unfortunately gone up in price recently though, which is a shame, and the euro rate doesn't help. It is right in the centre though.

Living in Portugal the Euro exchange rate doesn't bother me :D, I'll certainly look at them too.

Thanks, Brix, for the recommendation. We stayed at Alaska and it was a delight! Juan was very friendly and helpful.

The room was very comfortable, although, since we were at the back we had no view but it was very quiet.

The only problem was finding it. The door is so well hidden.

Can I suggest that anyone else going to Madrid try this place?

(Don't eat at the Ginger, the service was so bad we left, go to Miau instead where the food is cheap, very good, and the service almost too efficient)

Dessiato, I'm so glad you enjoyed it and liked Juan Carlos. Did you meet his dog Occo? This is my (terrible) picture of them both in the rain. I think it looks like Occo's nicked Juan's trousers.

The front door is a little difficult to find. If I'd known you were definitely going I'd have given some more detailed directions. This pic off Trip Advisor is quite helpful:

When I was last there in November Juan Carlos recommended a Galician restaurant called Taberna Maceiras where I had, again on his recommendation, the 'arroz marineros'. The place was packed with Madrileños - we were the only people there who weren't local I think. It was one of the best meals I have ever had. This is the place, for any urbs headed to Madrid:
