Hotel breakfasts

What is it about hotel breakfasts?

I mean, a bowl of cereal does it for me at home, but at hotels I just can't seem to resist cereal/muesli with yoghurt, two slices of buttered toast (I never have buttered toast at home) or a roll, a few glasses of fruit juice, maybe a fried or scrambled egg and perhaps a pastry as well.

Was in Newcastle this morning after a work jolly, and it was all paid for, so dammit, I was gonna eat it all! :D

I usually make a bacon and mushroom sandwich and wrap it up for my lunch. In your face hotel, I got two meals out of you.
 
I could always resist hotel breakfasts until a few years ago when they started doing smoked haddock with a poached egg on top, my downfall :o :)
 
I do try and resist having a full English every day when I stay in hotels. It's not exactly health food. I don't always succeed, though, and invariably I have at least some of the cooked breakfast every day just because it's something I never bother doing at home.

I miss work trips to Denmark, which I made quite a few of a few years ago, usually staying in cheap-ish hotels. The Danes are a civilised bunch: a good breakfast of cold meats, cheeses, salad, crusty bread and so on, and then a cup of strong coffee and a cigarette. :cool:
 
Hotel toast is the best thing ever, in a warm slightly rubbery way. Homemade toast never tastes so good.

The Radisson next to Helsinki station has the best breakfast I've ever had - a massive glittering hall of goodies, including make-your-own waffles and pancakes, vast chafing dishes of exotic mushrooms, herb butter, and a staggering range of bread.
 
Am I the only person who has a proper traditional English breakfast of a strong cup of coffee with a fistful of fags and no food - even in a Hotel?
 
I generally eat cereal then have the full English. The cereal are always those tiny boxes so you don't get much,

Ha to that!! One of the last B&Bs we stayed in was on the west coast. The cereal was in plastic containers, then there was the grapefruit bowl!!! and then the full fry up!! That landlady was ace :D

Must admit if the buffet brekkie has rolls and stuff it is not unknonw for a packed lunch to end it in a napkin or two.
 
Last time I had a hotel breakfast the bloke opposite me had a full english and the continental brekkie too.

Breakfast at the last mid-range place I stayed in in Delhi was puri bhaji, lime pickle and gallons of masala chai. It was amazing but they kept apologising to me for not having bacon and egg. :D
 
Usually when I am staying in a hotel, the bed and breakfast is paid for by my employer, but the lunch has to be paid for by me or, at least, I can only claim a sandwich worth. So, I save myself money by filling myself up with all the food I can fit in - fruit, eggs, beans, mushrooms (not hash browns - I don't like them), toast, bread rolls, pastries, cereal, lots of tea. Sometimes saute potatoes.

The only time I eat anything remotely like that for breakfast at home is when I have a load of people staying over after a pissup the night before, and we need to recover from our hangovers. And even then, we don't get all of the above! :)
 
Am I the only person who takes a few extra bits and pieces and hides them in their handbag for 'elevenses'. Or, in some cases, elevenses, lunch and afternoon tea. That's what I've always understood the cheese and ham and Madeira cake to be for at least.

No, I generally steal as much as I can carry home with me! Especially the mini pots of jam and sachets of coffee etc.
 
It's always disappointing when hotels offer crap breakfasts. Not overly impressed with the IBIS ones - they charge a fair bit and don't do English Breakfast (I know they're French but ffs!)

Proper quality hotels and even B and Bs are judged by how decent the brekkies are, and especially, if they've made an effort to do veggie sausages.

I've done that, particularly with fruit (but only when it is whole fruit, rather than fruit salad! :)) and yogurts.

One time when we were in Amsterdam and paying our own way, we made up sandwiches with the rolls and the hard boiled eggs that they provided for breakfast, and had those for our lunch.

Oh dear, yes - I am bad at that. I don't even just steal them if they are in cute little pots. When I cleared out my fridge recently, I found several of those mini plastic boxes of crap jam.

I think it comes from being on the dole for so many years, when it made sense to nick such things.

Having stayed in a lot of hotels and guest houses over the years, I often find that small guest houses do a much better breakfast, because they cook it to order, and because they make that little bit of effort, so you get freshly cooked veggie sausages etc.

The big hotels usually put out eggs and toast and keep it warm, ffs!

Having said that, one of the best hotels for breakfast was one I stayed in in Boston, MA, which was a big chain, possibly Marriot or something, and they had a chap who stood behind the counter and cooked your eggs for you. That's unusual in this country, although I always try to get poached eggs, because those are usually made specially, and I don't mind waiting a few minutes for them, rather than eating those rubber fried eggs, or chewy scrambled eggs otherwise available...

Kept me going all day tho, even with walking miles!

I had a wonderful fruity porridge concoction thing in a rather posh hotel in singapore. I wouldnt know how to describe it other than fruity lushness.
 
It's good to stuff yourself cos when you're staying in a hotel, you're usually a tourist and you're going to be walking about all day looking at thins, so it's important to load up on carbs

Surely if you're looking at thins, stuffing yourself might make you feel a bit bloated in comparison :hmm:


Anyway, I'm glad I'm not alone in making sandwiches out of the breakfast buffet :D
