hot chai

Rollem

two kinds of wonderful
girl a work bought me a cup of hot chai (sp?) yesterday

was lush

can you get it to "simply add water to" at home?

Yes, there's a brand called Tazo Chai, though you might have to go to a specialist deli for it. Best with lots of milk and sugar imo.

Make it at home:

2 cups water
3 - 4 whole cloves
1 stick cinnamon
3 - 4 cardamom pods, cracked open
4 tea bags
2 cups milk
4 tbsp sugar

Bring first 4 ingredients to boil. Add tea. Let steep until right strength. Add milk & return to heat. Add sugar.

(I think this makes a fair old bucketful, and 4 tbsp sugar is an awful lot, so reduce amounts or sugar according to no. of people/sweet tooth!)

Twinings chai is nice but basically sweet / cinnamony and not that kick-ass.
Starbucks chai is DISGUSTING - all milk and sugar and cinnamon, it's like drinking a sickly melted Milky Bar with a dusting of air freshener.
If you want a proper cup of chai - either make it yourself or buy a box of Palanquin brand spiced tea (on sale in tesco *eek - buy it somewhere else if you can*) - this blend has a proper peppery / gingery kick to it as well as cinnamony / clovey / cardamom sweetness. More 'savoury' than the others and definitely more of a bite - but it's still fine with milk & sugar.
*retires languidly to palanquin to have another cuppa*

On the subject of tea (& perhaps not worth its own thread) does anyone know where I can buy Turkish apple tea? I have tried Turkish cornershops & supermarkets, e.g. in Wood Green, to no avail, & Whittards seem to be the only place to stock it! (At something like £5.99 a pack  )

If you ever happen to be in the Shepherd's Purse in Whitby, North Yorkshire, they do all manner of Turkish apple/sour cherry teas. Otherwise, try here

Cheers. I do go to Whitby every now & then! All the money I save on not buying Whittards is probably going to go on mail order from Goodness Direct now... :o  (Looks like they also do instant chai).
