Horsham v Hamlet, Saturday 1st Feburary 2025

Who's up for this one then? I'm catching the Thameslink from London Bridge, which entails a change at Three Bridges but seems easy enough with two trains an hour. Its cheaper if you split your tickets and get them London - Three Bridges, then Three Bridges to Horsham. Its actually my first visit to this ground but I understand that its tidy walk along a busy road with no footpath in places, so the 23 or 98 bus from the station to the golf course seems to be a better option, from where it is a short walk to the ground.

I'll be doing this one. Regarding the cheaper split tickets on the trains, the cheaper tickets for the first leg are only valid for Thameslink services between London Bridge and Three Bridges. There's a direct hourly Thameslink service from London Bridge to Horsham leaving at 29 past the hour, journey time 71 minutes, or you can catch any other Thameslink train to Three Bridges and change there. A half hourly Service runs from Victoria via Clapham Junction and East Croydon on Southern Trains, which are faster, and you can connect with these at Three Bridges. For anyone travelling from local stations on the East Dulwich line, there's a good connection at East Croydon with a 10 minute wait for a Horsham service.

The 98 bus to the ground leaves from North Street, outside the main entrance to Horsham station, at 20 minute intervals. The 23 bus is an hourly service leaving at 09 past the hour. Horsham Golf Club is the stop for the ground, journey time 12-15 minutes. Return services depart from the Park & Ride facility across the road. It took me well over half an hour to walk all the way from the station on my only previous visit, so it's about 2 miles. There is a footpath on at least one side of the road or the other for the whole route, but you have to cross a couple of times when it runs out. I can't remember whether there were streetlights, as it was an early season game, but obviously it'll be dark by around 5pm.

The closest pub to the ground is the Boar's Head on the main road about half a mile before the ground, but is closes from 3pm-6pm. There are plenty of other pubs in the town centre. It's easy enough to walk into the town centre if arriving early, which is the same direction as the ground, then you can either continue on foot or catch a bus from there to the ground.

Oh.

“Sam German remains out injured and suffered an injury setback whilst completing his rehab at Bromley. A recovery date hasn't been set.

Anthony Jeffrey suffered a hamstring issue in training last week that could see him on the sidelines for up to 6 weeks.”

Shame I’ve got a game with Peckham tomorrow as it would be nice to break my season’s duck with a new ground tick.

Matchday information from our hosts:

I also found this site with a useful list of pubs. It's pity the Horsham Tap microbrewery is the wrong side of the station, although not actually that far. (You may need to re-enter "Horsham" in the search bar):

And the match preview from Horsham. (Our solitary away win was at Canvey of course, not at Wingate & Finchley on the opening day.)

Brad's pre-match thoughts. Looking to bring in some more new faces imminently:

Hudson replaces JBW at left back. Starts for Bremang and Ben Mason, a defender recently released by Hemel Hempstead, previously with Farnborough and Wimbledon.

Fantastic club very welcoming and we did nothing to spoil their day. Hit post second half but otherwise no attacking threat. Good we kept it to three as goal difference might be key to survival and we have been known to ship plenty near end of games. There are no strangers only friends you haven't met yet - hope our boys get friendly real soon cos they played like they'd only just met

Today illustrated how far away we are from competing at the top end of this division. We beat Horsham 5-2 at home a few months ago, but this was a very one sided contest.

We fell behind after 18 minutes. A great strike from the edge of the box. It took 40 minutes to get a shot at goal. The start of the second half was an improvement. We were a whisker away from equalising when a long throw from Mason was headed out to Bremang on the 18 yards line, and his cracking shot rebounded from the post before ricocheting just wide off a defender when it could easily have ended up in the net. The sending off of Ross Marshall with 20 minutes to go sunk us. He committed to a full blooded challenge near the touchline and simply didn't get there in time. An "orange card" offence, but it was hard to argue against the red shown by the referee. Our best defender will now miss 3 matches against Bowers, Folkestone and Hastings.

It was damage limitation after that, and our former hero Chris Dickson set up the second goal before netting the third himself.

The only positive is that other results were kind. Hendon, Hastings and Bowers all lost, while Bognor conceded an equaliser in the 4th minute of stoppage time. We're still 2 points above the bottom 4 and those teams have one fewer match to catch us. It's starting to get desperate. Two of the next three games are against teams below us. It's too early for single matches to be "must win", but we urgently need points on the board before that becomes the case.

Two things that won't save us from the drop - relying on other teams' results; being 'too good to go down' (either individually or as a collective)

We’re definitely not too good to drop, and are in a similar position to our relegation season. As we are I don’t think I expected us to get anything from Dover, Billericay, Horsham or maybe Chichester; it was the losses to Bognor and Whitehawk that worry. The next few games aren’t must win, but if we don’t I fear the worst.

With this current form, relegation is looking a certainty:

But the whole point of current form (or to be more accurate, recent form) tables is that they aren't the same as the overall table, it's just a guide as to who has been declining or improving over the most recent matches. If the season ended right now we wouldn't be going down. Do we need to improve? Yes, obviously. Am I worried? Yes, it would be naive not to be. Are we actually going down? It's too early to say.

Canvey had lost 7 on the spin, but won at Chatham yesterday. Chatham were pre-season bookies favourites, but have badly underachieved with a big budget and their own recent form is very poor. Hendon had lost the 5 games immediately prior to this snapshot of results, so that's a single point from their last 11 games. Even recent runaway leaders Dover have slipped into the bottom half of that form table.

All of the bottom 8 teams in the overall table except Canvey have changed their manager since November. So far only Whitehawk have shown a significant improvement. Our new man has had 3 games so far, including away trips to two of the top five. The people in the dressing room need to put the games we've already lost behind them and focus on those we've not yet played, because those will determine our fate. We've managed to cut out the defensive howlers, which is a start, but there must be a lack of confidence after such a poor run. The only way to rebuild confidence is to repeat the right habits until we get some results, then that should lead to further results. The London Senior Cup match tomorrow night is an ideal opportunity to start that process. Then we have 3 matches in 8 days from next Saturday, including two of the teams beneath us. These are the games we need to think about now, not those last 6 defeats.

As you say confidence is key but competence has its place too and I think you slightly sugar coat this dire performance. Not sure about cutting out defensive howlers - that third goal vs Horsham was just a long punt upfield which opened up centre of defence enabling a relatively straightforward finish; this follows on from the slip by centre back vs Billericay. Concentration lapses? Fitness? Add this to an attacking threat as convincing as a Rachel Reeves speech (eg Luke barely in games at the moment) and the clock is ticking. Saturday a must win.
