I bought them on Amazon, it took me a while to set them up, so too late to return them. But I'm not worried about that, I just need to get something which works.

Try getting a refund from amazon, their customer support can be pretty amazing.

Some of this isn’t quite right in practice.
If you were downloading 10gb files on different devices with different speeds - they would do exactly as this says - run at the speed of the slowest device.
But Just connecting a slow device wont slow down fast devices, however using it a lot will.

Yes, this is how I understood it as well. Just having a slow device connected won't make a difference to anything else, if however that device is downloading a large file the router will be busy with that for longer than it would with a faster device and therefore slow everything else down.
